Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo Picture Appreciation: A Treasure Among Bamboos

Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo is a treasure among bamboos. Its remarkable feature lies in its tender yellow culms, where at every node where branches and leaves emerge, a naturally formed light green shallow groove appears, with the position alternating node by node. At a glance, it looks like pieces of green jade inlaid on bars of gold, elegant and lovely, which is why the ancient Haizhou Gazetteer called it "Golden Inlaid Jade Bamboo." Hearing this, you must be eager to see the beauty of Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo for yourself, so let us now enjoy some pictures of it together.

I. About Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo

Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo is a treasure among bamboos. Its remarkable feature lies in its tender yellow culms, where at every node where branches and leaves emerge, a naturally formed light green shallow groove appears, with the position alternating node by node. At a glance, it looks like pieces of green jade inlaid on bars of gold, elegant and lovely, which is why the ancient Haizhou Gazetteer called it "Golden Inlaid Jade Bamboo." The culms are 4-10 m tall and 2-5 cm in diameter. New culms are tender yellow, gradually turning golden yellow, with green longitudinal stripes between the internodes; some rhizomes also have green stripes. The leaves are green, with a few bearing yellow-white variegated stripes. The culms are vivid, alternating yellow and green, which is why it is called Golden Inlaid Jade, and it is very eye-catching. Some lower parts of the culms are zigzag-curved.

II. Morphological Characteristics of Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo

1. Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo spreads rhizomes and produces shoots vigorously, has strong adaptability, and is easy to plant into groves. It is mostly propagated by transplanting mother bamboos, and raising seedlings by burying rhizomes is also very easy. It can withstand low temperatures of -20°C.

2. The culms are 9 m tall and 4 cm thick, golden yellow; apart from the green groove on the side with branches, there are several green longitudinal stripes. New culms are densely covered with deciduous fine hairs; both the culm nodes and sheath nodes are slightly raised, with a white powdery ring below the nodes. The leaves are 7-15 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide. The shoot period is from late April to early May. The culms are beautifully colored and are cultivated for ornamental purposes.

III. Cultivation and Planting of Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo

1. To plant Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo, the first step is to control the planting density well. In order to form a green landscape as quickly as possible, the spacing between plants and rows when planting Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo can be chosen as 50-80 cm × 50-80 cm. Plant immediately upon arrival. The size of the planting hole depends on the size of the mother bamboo's root ball. Generally, the planting hole should be no smaller than 1.5 times the diameter of the original soil and rhizome roots, with the principle that the rhizome roots can spread out after planting. Be sure to dig the hole deep, plant the bamboo shallow, pack the soil tightly below, and cover loosely with soil above. Specifically: the depth of the planting hole is generally 60 cm. Before planting, first place 15 cm of planting soil at the bottom. If conditions permit, spread a layer of organic fertilizer at the bottom of the planting hole, about 10-15 cm thick, then cover with a layer of planting soil. When planting, first remove the straw rope or straw wrap used for binding, so that the rhizome roots are in close contact with the soil at the bottom of the hole, at a moderate depth, with the rhizome roots spread out. The soil covering depth should be slightly deeper than the mother bamboo's original buried position by 3-6 cm. After tramping firm, build a ring and water. After the water seeps in, add a layer of loose soil to reduce soil moisture evaporation.

2. When planting Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo in green spaces and courtyards, attention should be paid to its growth relationship with other plants, especially the impact of its strong ground-level rhizome spreading on the growth of other plants. When planting, isolation boards should be buried in advance according to its expansion area, and the height of the isolation boards should be as level with the ground as possible so as not to affect the ornamental effect.

Early spring in February is the best time to appreciate Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo. In addition, from October each year to March of the following year, and June during the plum rain season, are all good seasons for afforestation. For some landscaping projects rushing to meet deadlines that need to be constructed in other seasons, such as midsummer, rich experience and post-planting management techniques are required.
