What are the characteristics of the lucky bamboo? How to cultivate it

The lucky bamboo prefers a warm, humid and semi-shaded environment, and dislikes direct strong sunlight. It is most afraid of waterlogging; long-term waterlogging will cause root rot, leading to yellowing of the leaves and even the death of the whole plant. When cultivating, note the following:

① The soil is best a loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam.

② After being moved outdoors in early spring, it should be placed in a shady spot, such as under a shade shed, under the eaves, or in a semi-shaded spot on a balcony; when cultivated in the open ground, it should be planted under the shade of trees, but weeding and loosening the soil are needed to keep the soil loose. The key to growing lucky bamboo well is to avoid direct strong sunlight; long-term direct strong sunlight will cause the leaf edges and leaf tips to scorch, and even the whole leaf to turn yellow, affecting growth and reducing ornamental value.

③ Keep the environment humid; if the air is dry for a long time, it can also easily cause the leaves to dry and scorch, the whole leaf to turn yellow, and even to wither.

④ The lucky bamboo has fleshy roots, so watering must be done with care, and waterlogging must be strictly avoided; long-term waterlogging will cause root rot. In summer, watering should be sufficient to keep the soil moist; in hot summer weather, especially on dry and hot days, in addition to watering, foliar spraying is also needed, and water should be sprinkled around the ground to increase environmental humidity. In spring and autumn, watering should not be too much or too frequent; water only when the soil is dry, and let it dry between waterings; in winter, watering should be controlled.

⑤ Fertilization should be appropriate. In spring and autumn, generally apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once every 20 days or so, such as bean cake water or a compound chemical fertilizer solution, and the concentration should preferably be on the weak side. During the growing period, several foliar feedings are suitable (foliar feeding can use 0.2% monopotassium phosphate plus urea), which can make the leaves more verdant and the fruit plumper.

⑥ The lucky bamboo blooms in May to June and bears fruit in September to October. When flowering, it must not be exposed to rain; on rainy days it should be moved indoors. Generally, plants grown in the ground bear fruit more easily than potted ones.

⑦ After the Start of Summer, division propagation can be carried out in combination with repotting and soil changing.

⑧ After winter begins, it should be moved indoors and the room temperature kept above 5°C to ensure safe overwintering. When overwintering in open-ground cultivation, soil should be banked up for cold protection; in the following spring, cut off the old leaves, and new leaves can still sprout.
