The flower language of the redbud

Flower language: family affection, harmony, a thriving household. Because its wood resembles the chaste tree (Vitex) but is purple in color, it is called redbud (zi jing); its common name is basket tree, also called purple pearl. Its leaves are round-heart-shaped, and in spring it blooms with red-purple flowers.

Symbolic meaning: When the redbud blooms, branch after branch, cluster after cluster, like dye, like a painting. Amid displacement and wandering, how many longings linger in a drifting heart. The wind blows the redbud, and countless blossoms fall. It makes the melancholy poet think of kin at the sight. The deep bond of siblings who once shared each day has gone, never to return, like fallen petals with no place to rest. In the shadows of the flowers, have you felt those eyes far away, longing for the wanderer's return, letting you feel the warmth brimming with faint family affection? Taken into courtyards by people and becoming a traditional courtyard tree, the redbud sinks its roots deep into the courtyards of ordinary households, and has always been a symbol of family harmony and deep blood ties, becoming the representative plant of family affection.

The allusion of the redbud:

In early spring, the redbud blooms as spring arrives, and its gorgeous flowers densely cover every branch of the whole tree; the flowers are rose-colored, shaped like a flock of fluttering butterflies, layer upon layer, the whole tree a brilliant red. The reason the redbud is used to compare family affection and symbolize brotherly harmony and a thriving household comes from an allusion: legend has it that during the Southern Dynasties, the prefect of Jingzhao, Tian Zhen, and his brothers Tian Qing and Tian Guang divided up the family property. When all the other property had been divided and settled, they finally discovered that a redbud tree in the courtyard, with spreading branches and lush leaves and clusters of blossoms, was hard to deal with. That night, the three brothers discussed cutting this redbud tree into three sections, one for each. Early the next morning, when the three brothers went to cut the tree, they found that all the branches and leaves of this redbud had withered, and all its flowers had fallen. Seeing this, Tian Zhen could not help sighing to his two brothers: "People are not as good as trees." Later, the three brothers merged the household again and lived in harmony. That redbud tree seemed quite to understand human nature, and accordingly regained its vitality, growing with abundant flowers and lush leaves.
