Low-effort and easy to care for: how to grow peace lilies

Peace lily, also known as Spathiphyllum. It is a common potted plant, fresh and elegant, and has a certain effect on filtering indoor stale air. The peace lily is a low-effort, easy-to-care-for plant. If you do not have much time but still want to grow plants, you can choose the peace lily. Below, let's talk about the peace lily!

Morphological characteristics of the peace lily

Peace lily, perennial herb. It has short rhizomes; sometimes the stems become thickened and woody, erect, prostrate, or climbing on other objects by small roots, a few floating, often with milky sap. Leaves are long elliptic-lanceolate, tapering at both ends, with obvious veins, long petioles, sheath-like at the base, usually basal, and when stem-borne then alternate, arranged in 2 rows or spirally, of various shapes, from sword-shaped with parallel veins to arrow-shaped with netted veins, entire or split. The scape is erect, rising above the leaf cluster; the spathe is erect and upward, slightly curled, white; the spadix is cylindrical, white.

How to grow a peace lily

1. Choose loose potting soil with good drainage and air permeability, not easily compacted soil. The substrate can be made from leaf mold, peat soil, and a small amount of perlite, with the pH controlled at around 5.5.

2. The peace lily is shade-tolerant. As long as there is about 60% scattered light, it can meet its growth needs, so it can be grown year-round indoors in a spot with bright scattered light. In summer, avoid direct strong light, otherwise the leaves tend to turn yellow; in winter in the north, the peace lily likes high temperatures and should preferably be cultivated in a high-temperature greenhouse.

3. During the growing period, keep the potting soil moist, but avoid overwatering, otherwise it easily causes root rot and the plant to turn yellow and wither. In summer or dry seasons, when watering, you can use a fine-nozzle sprayer to spray water on the leaves; do not water too much at one time; in winter, control watering and only keep the potting soil slightly moist.

4. When planting, add a small amount of organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer. Because it grows quickly and has a relatively large fertilizer requirement, during the growing season a liquid fertilizer must be applied once every 1-2 weeks.

Growing a peace lily is not difficult, and its benefits are great; it is a must-have plant for home life. In addition, the peace lily is known as the "flower of innocence," carrying meanings of purity, calm, peace, and well-being. If grown at home, it is also a good omen.
