Is Pothos Cold-Tolerant? Grow a Patch of Greenery Even in Winter
Pothos is one of the most common houseplants, because it offers a great visual effect and is relatively easy to grow. Some people keep pothos on the balcony, but in the cold northern winter they do not move it back inside, believing that pothos is cold-tolerant. So, is pothos cold-tolerant?
Pothos is not cold-tolerant.
Pothos is a shade-loving plant that prefers a hot and humid environment, dislikes direct sunlight, and likes shade. It prefers soil rich in humus, loose and fertile, and slightly acidic. Its overwintering temperature should not be lower than 15°C. It likes scattered light and is fairly shade-tolerant. It lives as soon as it meets water, and because of its tenacious vitality it is called the "flower of life." Its trailing green stems and leaves are very easy to please. When grown indoors, whether in a pot or as a few stems cut for water culture, it can grow well. It can be allowed to climb a cylinder wrapped in palm fiber, or trained into a hanging form for a study or windowsill, or simply grown in a pot, making it a beautiful flower that is very suitable for indoor growing.
Pothos likes warm, humid environments and requires loose, fertile soil with good drainage. For potted pothos, choose fertile, loose, well-draining leaf mold soil, preferably slightly acidic. Pothos is extremely shade-tolerant and can be placed in a bright spot indoors in all four seasons; in a dim indoor room, it should be moved every half month to a brighter environment for a period of recovery, otherwise the internodes tend to lengthen and the leaves become smaller. Pothos likes hot and humid environments, and its overwintering temperature should not be lower than 15°C. The potting soil should be kept moist, and the leaves should be misted frequently to raise air humidity and favor the growth of aerial roots. During the vigorous growing season, apply liquid fertilizer once a month. For plants kept indoors for a long time, the leaves at the base of the stems tend to fall off, reducing their ornamental value; in May and June, when the temperature warms up, prune and renew them along with cuttings to encourage new shoots to sprout from the base of the stems.
Is pothos cold-tolerant? Pothos is not cold-tolerant, so in winter it needs to be moved back into a warm indoor space, and only then will pothos avoid withering or dying from severe cold. To grow pothos, you must give it a suitable environment so that it can flourish with luxuriant foliage.
