How to care for spider plants; growing plants is like cultivating the mind

Spider plant is also called hangpen grass or gua lan. It likes warm, humid environments and fears growing under strong sunlight. It has strong adaptability. There are many varieties of spider plants, each with different forms and characteristics. So how should spider plants be cared for? Please see the explanation below.

Spider plants like warm, humid and semi-shady places and cannot tolerate drought. Home-grown spider plants should avoid sun exposure in summer and be placed indoors for viewing during the day. If conditions permit, place them outdoors in a wind-sheltered spot at night (but it must be ventilated). The soil should be loose, rich in humus and well-drained; soil that is too wet or too dry will cause the branches and leaves to turn yellow and wither. Usually, clean water can often be sprayed on the leaf surface to keep it clean and moist. In winter, they should be kept indoors at around 15°C to avoid frost damage.

For household potted spider plants, under general conditions, phenomena such as dry leaf tips and leaves gradually losing their luster often occur. To care for and manage spider plants well, the following measures should be taken.

Appropriate light: Spider plants like semi-shady environments. In spring and autumn, avoid direct exposure to strong sunlight. In summer, sunlight is especially strong, so they can only receive some slanting light in the morning and evening, and 50%-70% of sunlight should be shaded during the day; otherwise the leaf tips will dry up, especially for variegated varieties, which are even more afraid of strong sunlight. Golden-edge spider plants grow more beautifully in weak light, with the yellow golden edges more obvious and the leaves glossier. But in winter, they should receive more sunlight to keep the leaves tender and fresh green. Household potted spider plants should be placed in front of a south-facing window; otherwise the leaves will lose their luster or even wither.

Appropriate watering: Spider plants like humid environments, and the potting soil should often be kept moist. In summer, watering should be sufficient. Around noon and in the evening, water should also be sprayed on the branches and leaves to prevent the leaves from drying out. Indoor areas often have a lot of dust. If a lot of dust accumulates on spider plants, it not only affects their growth but also damages the fresh and bright appearance of the branches and leaves, so the branches and leaves should often be sprayed and washed to keep them bright and beautiful. Dead leaves and yellow leaves on the lower part should be removed at any time. Normally, normal humidity should be maintained; it should not be too dry, nor too wet.

Changing soil and repotting: In managing potted spider plants, in order to achieve lush stems and leaves, the soil and pot should be changed once every year in March. If the pot is relatively deep and the base fertilizer is sufficient, repotting can be done once every two years. When repotting, knock the plant out of the pot, cut off dead and rotten roots and excess roots, replace with new culture soil rich in humus, and then apply livestock hoof and horn pieces or decomposed cake fertilizer as base fertilizer. After planting, place it in a semi-shady, warm place to recover. The most suitable growth temperature for spider plants is around 25°C. After the plant resumes vigorous growth, hang the flower pot under the eaves of a corridor or in an appropriate indoor position. Generally, the height should be such that it does not bump the head, and attention should be paid to ventilation.

Growing plants is like cultivating the mind. Since you have chosen to plant spider plants, it is very necessary to learn how to care for them. Of course, growing spider plants can also bring us many benefits, such as helping our irritable minds return to calm and bringing us a pleasant mood!
