How do you propagate pothos? Cuttings are the most commonly used method of propagating pothos
Soil-grown pothos can be said to be the most commonly used method in home cultivation, which makes pothos cuttings the most commonly used method of propagating pothos at home. So, what are pothos cuttings? What are the specific steps? This article gives a brief introduction to the above questions for friends interested in growing pothos.
Pothos is usually propagated by the cutting method. In late spring and early summer, select a healthy pothos vine, cut a 15 cm to 30 cm stem section, remove the leaves from 1 to 2 nodes at the base, being careful not to damage the aerial roots, then insert it into plain sand or coal cinder to a depth of 1/3 of the cutting, water thoroughly, and place it in a shaded spot. Spray water on the leaves every day or cover with plastic film to retain moisture. As long as the environment is kept at no less than 20°C, the survival rate is above 90%.
The specific methods of the cutting method are as follows:
1. Selection and treatment of cuttings
For cuttings, choose healthy, pest-free, semi-lignified stems, cut them into 10-13 cm lengths, make the lower cut at an angle, keep 2-3 leaves at the upper end, and cut the leaves in half to reduce water evaporation and help the cuttings survive.
2. Cutting substrate
The cutting substrate requires loose, breathable, well-drained loam or sandy soil rich in humus; vermiculite is best, as this makes rooting fast and the survival rate high. Before inserting, disinfect the soil well with 2% formalin or 5% potassium permanganate.
3. Cutting method
Quickly dip the lower end of the prepared cutting in ABT rooting powder or indolebutyric acid, then insert it into the previously prepared substrate to half its length, water thoroughly so that the cutting is in close contact with the substrate, and then cover with plastic film.
4. Management after insertion
(1) After insertion, be careful to keep the soil moist and the air temperature relatively high. Soil moisture of about 50% is suitable, while air humidity of 80%-90% is best.
(2) In the early stage of cutting, keep the shade frame shading at about 80%; this can prevent direct strong sunlight while ensuring sufficient scattered light to facilitate photosynthesis in leafy cuttings and promote rooting.
(3) Through the above treatment, roots generally form after 20 days, and the film can be removed to increase light. At the same time, on sunny summer days still pay attention to misting the leaves and shading, and in winter pay attention to cold protection. About 10 days after rooting, they can be moved into pots for normal management.
It is said that pothos cuttings have low requirements for season and are suitable all year round, and pothos has extremely strong vitality, so the survival rate is also very high, making it quite suitable for home cultivation.
