How to care for spider plants - this method is quite informative

The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is native to South Africa and has many alternative names, such as pot grass and guilan. The spider plant is a plant of the Liliaceae family, with leaves clustered at the tip of the stem, drooping outward from the edge of the pot and swaying in the wind, resembling a crane spreading its wings and leaping. Because of this, the spider plant, with its "fairy"-like quality, is widely loved by the public. So, how do you care for a spider plant?

1. Temperature: Spider plants like warm weather and are suited to growing at around 20 degrees. In winter, attention must be paid to protection from the cold; it can be moved indoors, and it must never be placed in a windy spot by a window, to avoid damaging the leaves from freezing. If the temperature is too low, the spider plant will stop growing, and if it drops below 5 degrees, cold damage may occur.

2. Light: Although spider plants prefer cool shade, they should still be given enough sunlight so the plant can carry out photosynthesis and thus grow normally. When light is insufficient, the leaves will turn yellow; when light is too strong, the leaves will also turn yellow and withered, and may even die. In spring and autumn, it can be placed in a cool spot that still receives sunlight; in summer, direct sunlight should be avoided, and more than 60% of the sunlight should be blocked.

3. Soil: To plant spider plants, choose soil with good drainage and good air permeability. You can choose a mix of leaf mold, peat soil, garden soil, river sand, etc. as the growing medium. For example, you can put some water-permeable expanded clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot, about 4 cm thick, then place the plant in the center of the pot, add the mixed soil until the pot is seven or eight parts full, press the soil firmly with your hands, and then cover the surface with a layer of expanded clay pebbles.

4. Watering: Spider plants prefer moisture, especially during the summer growing season, when they need to be watered once a day and the leaves sprayed with water twice. In spring and autumn, watering once every 5 days is fine. Because spider plants are afraid of cold, they should not be watered too much in winter to avoid freezing, and once every half a month is enough.

5. Pest and disease prevention: Spider plants sometimes get some scale insects, whiteflies, etc. If found, the pests should be removed promptly. When the front of the leaves is found to be turning yellow, watering and fertilizing should be increased.

6. Fertilizing: Spider plants quite like fertilizer. Except in winter, they can be fertilized once every 10 days. The fertilizer can be organic fertilizer liquid or fertilizer specifically for spider plants, both of which are sold at flower markets. When the temperature is below 5 degrees, fertilizing should be stopped.
