What Causes Leaf Drop in Schefflera octophylla and What Solutions Are There

Schefflera octophylla (umbrella tree) is a fairly common plant among household potted plants. It not only beautifies the home environment but also helps purify the air. When growing Schefflera octophylla, we may encounter leaf drop. So, what causes leaf drop in Schefflera octophylla? What solutions are there? Let me introduce them below.

What causes leaf drop in Schefflera octophylla?

1. Temperature too low. In winter, the care temperature for Schefflera octophylla must not be lower than 5°C and should be kept above 15°C. In winter, place Schefflera octophylla in a spot with as much sunlight as possible. If you have heating equipment or an air conditioner, do not place Schefflera octophylla near these devices.

2. Watering too frequently. In winter, reduce the amount of watering and control the amount of fertiliser. Generally, watering thoroughly once every three or four days is better. Because winter is dry, you can spray a little clean water on the leaves every day. In late autumn, you can spray 0.3% to 0.5% monopotassium phosphate and other phosphorus-potassium fertilisers on the leaves as foliar feeding to promote the ageing of branches and leaves and improve cold resistance in winter.

3. Pests and diseases. Conditions such as high temperature, high humidity and poor ventilation in greenhouses and indoors can all lead to pests and diseases such as anthracnose, scale insects and red spider mites. Especially when leaves curl and drop and there are white spots on the leaf surface, you should check even more carefully.

What solutions are there for leaf drop in Schefflera octophylla?

For prevention, give good light conditions. Fertilise with thin fertiliser and apply it frequently; avoid applying it all at once or in excess. The temperature needs to be kept above 10°C, and cold winds must be avoided. Even a brief exposure to cold wind, followed by placing the plant in a suitable temperature environment, will still cause blackened leaves and leaf drop. In this case, reduce the frequency of watering.

The safe overwintering temperature for Schefflera octophylla is 8°C. In summer, avoid direct sunlight; suitable shading is 30~40%. Under scorching sun, the leaves will lose their gloss and become scorched and yellow; too much shade will cause leaf drop. Because it grows vigorously, apply fertiliser once a month and supply water fully to keep the potting soil moist; both excessive dryness and excessive wetness will cause leaves to drop. During the growing period, spray the leaves frequently; when the air is dry, the leaves will fade green and turn yellow.

A reminder from the editor: Schefflera octophylla is a plant that fears the cold, so the indoor temperature must be adjusted well, and in winter, good warmth-keeping work must be done. Also, when fertilising, be sure to use an appropriate amount, not too much, otherwise it will cause harm to Schefflera octophylla.
