How to grow potted tree peonies and what to watch out for

As the saying goes, "Only the peony is truly of national beauty," and the peony's prosperity and abundance are loved by people everywhere. With the development of container-growing techniques, tree peonies can also be grown in pots, so how do you grow potted tree peonies and what should you watch out for? Below, the editor introduces the methods for you.

First is the potting soil mix. Preparing the soil for tree peonies is fairly simple; the potting soil should likewise be a well-drained, fairly fertile, sandy loam. Generally it is made by mixing leaf mold, garden soil and fine river sand (ratio 2:2:1), then spraying with a fungicide (carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, mancozeb and the like are all fine; for the specific concentration, refer to the amount of soil used and the instructions) to disinfect it before using it as the growing medium.

Next is potting management. The best time to pot is between late September and early October. Line the bottom of the pot with broken pot shards or small stone slabs, and add about 2cm of gravel or furnace slag, which helps with drainage. Then place the tree peony plant in, taking care to cut off broken roots, fragmented roots and poorly growing roots. Then add the growing medium prepared above. When the soil reaches 1/3 of the pot's depth, lift the tree peony gently by 2 to 3cm, which lets the roots spread out and allows the growing medium to work in between the roots, then firm the soil down. Note that it must not be planted too deep or too shallow; it is best if the root crown is just exposed at the soil surface.

Next is light management. Tree peonies like sun but fear scorching exposure, so in summer you must ensure sufficient light while also avoiding scorching sun. In spring and autumn, it is best to place them in a spot sheltered from the wind and facing the sun. Generally speaking, the overall principle is: "provide shade at midday in summer, and place it in the sun in winter to fully receive sunlight."

Finally, temperature management. The tree peony is a flower that likes warmth and cannot tolerate severe cold or high temperatures. Generally speaking, for a potted tree peony to overwinter, the temperature is best kept at 5-8°C, which can keep it from sprouting. If the winter room temperature is above 16°C and constant, the buds may fail to go through vernalization, so at this time you should note that after the end of October you should place the tree peony outdoors in a spot sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, so the buds experience low temperatures to break dormancy, which helps the tree peony bloom. Before the flowering period in April, it can be placed indoors for viewing. In summer, pay attention to spraying water often to raise humidity and lower the temperature.

The above is what the editor has introduced for you; I hope it can help everyone. Wait for the flowering season to come, and when the tree peony blooms, prosperity will always follow.
