Is Golden Spider Plant Easy to Grow? A Detailed Guide to Planting Methods
Golden Spider Plant is a type of spider plant, named for the ring of pale yellow along the edges of its green leaves. Perhaps for this very reason, Golden Spider Plant is even more popular in home decoration. So, is Golden Spider Plant easy to grow? This article aims to briefly introduce the planting methods for Golden Spider Plant.
Golden Spider Plant, like other spider plants, is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant that grows quickly and is easy to cultivate. It can be grown and enjoyed year-round in a relatively bright room. It is one of the most suitable varieties for hanging or placing on top of cabinets or on flower stands.
1. Potting soil requirements
For potted spider plants, a mixture of equal parts humus, peat soil, garden soil and river sand with a small amount of base fertilizer is commonly used as the growing medium. Note that the medium should be replaced every 2 to 3 years. When replacing the medium, it is best to use a loose, humus-rich, well-draining potting soil, and then apply livestock hoof and horn pieces or decomposed cake fertilizer as base fertilizer. Note that the soil and pot should be changed once every year in March to April. If the pot is relatively deep and the base fertilizer is sufficient, the pot can be changed once every two years. When repotting, knock the plant out of the pot and cut off dead and rotten roots and excess root systems.
2. Temperature regulation
Spider plants prefer a warm and humid climate and are not cold-tolerant; they grow best at 20-24°C. In summer, pay attention to ventilation and cooling; in winter, the temperature must not drop below 5°C, and around 10°C is best. While regulating temperature, also pay attention to controlling it to prevent the spider plant from growing too long. The day-night temperature difference should not be too large, to avoid yellowing of the spider plant's leaves.
3. Light regulation
A semi-shaded environment is best; in spring and summer, shade treatment is needed, and diffused light is optimal. It should be placed in a cool, ventilated spot, with a windowsill or a table near a window being ideal. Note that in summer it must not be placed in direct sunlight; during the day, 50% to 70% of sunlight needs to be blocked, otherwise the leaf tips will dry up. Variegated varieties in particular are even more afraid of strong sunlight. At the same time, however, exposure to diffused light must also be ensured. In winter, make sure it receives plenty of sunlight. In summer, when sunlight is especially intense, it should only receive some slanting light in the morning and evening.
4. Water and fertilizer regulation
Spider plants like humidity and need relatively high air humidity. Watering should be sufficient, preferably once in the morning and once in the evening. During the growing season, apply liquid nitrogen fertilizer about once every 15 days. From late spring to early autumn, apply organic fertilizer liquid once every 7 to 10 days. However, for varieties such as Golden Spider Plant and Golden Heart Spider Plant, note that nitrogen fertilizer should be applied sparingly, so as to avoid the leaf variegation fading or even disappearing, which would affect their appearance.
5. Pest and disease control
Spider plants have relatively few pests and diseases; the main issue is yellowing at the leaf tips, in which case water and fertilizer should be regulated and the diseased leaves cut off. If the potting soil becomes waterlogged and ventilation is poor, besides causing root rot, root rot disease may also occur, and spraying pesticides for control should be noted. One more thing to note: poor growth, short and small leaves, and dry leaf tips are mainly caused by direct strong light and dry air, so attention should be paid to frequently spraying water on the leaf surfaces.
The planting and care methods for Golden Spider Plant are the same as those for other spider plants, all requiring control of light, water and fertilizer, among other things. But one thing to note is that Golden Spider Plant should be given less nitrogen fertilizer.
