How do you grow cacti so they grow fast? A detailed guide to cultivation methods
Cacti have the effect of resisting radiation, and many people in daily life keep cacti at home or in the office to counter radiation and so on. But after buying a cactus and bringing it home, many people do not know how it should be cared for. So, how do you grow cacti so they grow fast?
Watering and misting
Terrestrial cacti have distinct growth and dormancy periods; they need watering during the growth period, and little or even no watering during dormancy. For epiphytic types, if the winter temperature is kept above 12°C, they can be watered and misted year-round; if the winter temperature is kept below 12°C, watering can be reduced as appropriate and misting stopped. When watering, follow this principle: "water thoroughly when dry, do not water when not dry"; the water temperature should be as close as possible to the soil temperature, water in the morning (before sunrise) and evening (after sunset) in summer, and water between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in winter; also pour the water directly onto the potting soil, otherwise it will affect the appearance of the spines. In addition, in summer, sprinkle water on the ground to increase air humidity.
Fertilizing
Follow this principle when fertilizing: timely, appropriate in amount, and suited to the plant. Fertilize in spring and autumn, once every 20 days, choosing the early morning or evening of a sunny day; if the potting soil is relatively dry, sprinkle a little water on the potting soil before fertilizing, with a concentration of 0.05%-0.2% being suitable, then water thoroughly once the next morning for an even better effect. Terrestrial types require fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorus and low in nitrogen, while epiphytic types require more nitrogen fertilizer.
Light
Terrestrial types prefer ample sunlight, especially in winter when they need full sun exposure. Generally, tall columnar and flat cacti are more tolerant of strong light and can be placed outdoors in summer without shading; smaller spherical types, however, mostly prefer semi-shade in summer, and during the hot summer months of June to August, cover a round piece of plastic film over the growing point at the top of the golden barrel cactus and around it, so that all parts of the sphere grow evenly. Epiphytic cacti, by contrast, require semi-shade conditions year-round.
Temperature
The suitable temperature for cactus growth is between 20-35°C. Terrestrial types do not require too high a temperature during winter dormancy; while keeping the potting soil dry, maintaining a temperature of 4-7°C is sufficient. Epiphytic types, however, require a higher temperature in winter, with 10-13°C or higher being suitable. When summer temperatures reach 30-35°C, most cacti slow their growth, and sometimes the stems of certain species turn yellow or get scorched; at this time you must provide shade and sprinkle more water on the ground to lower the temperature.
Air
Most cacti and succulents originate from open desert areas with good ventilation and fresh air. Therefore, during the hot midsummer weather, ventilation and cooling of the cultivation site should be done well. Choose a cultivation greenhouse in a well-ventilated environment, and install more vents such as windows and skylights, so as to allow ventilation and air exchange in hot weather. If necessary, equipment such as exhaust fans, blowers or electric fans can be installed to strengthen the air circulation in the environment, so as to help cacti and succulents get through the summer safely.
How do you grow cacti so they grow fast? Cacti are actually very easy to keep alive, and can survive normally without much care; it only takes a little effort to help them grow, so people who keep cacti do not need to worry or be nervous about them, and can simply manage them according to the relevant cultivation methods.
