A detailed guide to Gloxinia propagation methods, practical tips for growing flowers at home
Nowadays more and more people like to use plants to decorate their environment and beautify their homes, and violets, because of their abundant blooms, bright colors, rich fragrance, and long flowering period, have excellent ornamental value, and are therefore deeply loved by everyone. So do you know how violets are propagated? Next, the editor will introduce the methods of violet propagation to you.
Violet propagation methods:
1. Violet seed propagation
Violets are mostly propagated by sowing seeds. The sowing time is generally from mid-August to early October. Note that the sowing time should not be too late, otherwise it will affect the plant's growth, overwintering, and the quantity and quality of flowering. It can also be adjusted according to the desired flowering time. Sowing in a greenhouse in February means flowering in May; sowing in March means flowering in June, and so on. However, if sown in July, you will have to wait until February to March of the following year for them to bloom in the greenhouse. Seeds should not be sown too densely, otherwise the seedlings are prone to damping-off disease.
2. Violet leaf cutting propagation
Leaf cutting is the most commonly used method for violet propagation, generally carried out in spring and autumn. Select healthy leaves from the plant that are free from pest and disease infection. If it is a variegated variety, choose leaves with fewer variegated patterns and more green as the best choice. Use a sharp knife to cut a leaf with a thick middle section and a petiole of about 3 cm. Let it dry slightly and insert it upright into a medium mixed with peat and perlite. After leaf cutting, water thoroughly, then keep it moist, provide appropriate shade, and usually at a temperature of about 23°C, roots will develop in 15 to 20 days. After that, reduce spraying. After 8 to 10 weeks, small plantlets can form. A large leaf can produce more than 10 small seedlings. You can select strong seedlings for transplanting; from leaf cutting to flowering generally takes 5 to 6 months.
3. Violet water cutting propagation
Violets can also be propagated by water cutting. Cut a leaf diagonally from the violet and insert the petiole into clean water. Note that the bottom needs to remain suspended. Add and change water, and roots will form and grow into a seedling in about 1 month. During the leaf cutting process, treating the petiole with a 25 mg/liter hormone for 24 hours is beneficial for rooting.
There are quite a few methods that can be used for violet propagation, among which sowing and leaf cutting are used relatively often. In addition, there are also various propagation methods such as division and tissue culture. For home growing, it is recommended to use methods such as leaf cutting, which are relatively simple to operate. The above is the relevant knowledge about violet propagation introduced to you by the editor.
