Temperature, Humidity, Light, and Water Are All Essential: Money Tree Growing Methods and Precautions

The Money Tree (Pachira aquatica) has an auspicious name and an elegant appearance, making it a common choice for home greenery and bonsai. However, growing a Money Tree still requires a certain amount of care, otherwise it may not succeed. So, what are the growing methods and precautions for the Money Tree?

Currently, Money Trees in homes are mostly potted. This article uses potted cultivation as an example to look at how to grow a Money Tree at home and the precautions for doing so.

I. Sunlight Should Be Appropriate

Money Trees should be placed in a spot indoors with ample sunlight. When positioning them, make sure the leaf surfaces face the sunlight, and do not let them stay shaded for long periods, otherwise the branches and leaves will become twisted and deformed. It is best to spray the Money Tree leaves with water once every 3 to 5 days, which both aids photosynthesis and makes the branches and leaves more attractive.

II. Watering Should Be Moderate

Money Trees have strong adaptability to water; generally, whether watered heavily outdoors or not watered for more than ten days indoors, they will not suffer from waterlogging or drought. But watering is still an important part of Money Tree cultivation. The first principle of watering a Money Tree is to err on the wet side rather than the dry side. Water more in the high-temperature summer months and less in winter; water more during the vigorous growth period and less for small or newly planted specimens. Under normal conditions, watering once every 15 to 20 days is sufficient.

III. Fertilizing Should Be Appropriate

Money Trees need more fertilizer than other flowering plants and trees. When repotting, the ratio of fertilizer to soil can be 1:3. Fertilizer soil includes a mixture of decomposed leaf litter, miscellaneous bone meal, and soybean cake residue, among others. This fertilizer soil is highly effective and easy to obtain. But note that it must be fully decomposed, to avoid "burning" the leaves yellow. It is worth noting that during the Money Tree's growth period (that is, from May to September), a decomposed liquid fertilizer or flower-growing fertilizer should be applied once every 15 days, so that it develops deep roots and lush leaves.

IV. Temperature and Humidity Should Be Suitable

The most suitable growing temperature for the Money Tree is 18-30°C, and it has relatively high requirements for temperature and humidity. Take care to maintain a temperature above 15°C and frequently spray the branches and leaves with water to increase humidity. In late autumn and winter, take care to do a good job of protecting against cold and frost. For indoor cultivation in summer, water once every 3-5 days; in spring and autumn, once every 5-10 days. In winter, it depends on the room temperature; if the room temperature is around 12°C, watering once a month is sufficient.

V. The Repotting Season Should Be Suitable

Newly planted Money Tree specimens do not need repotting in the same year, to prevent the tree shape from becoming distorted. The suitable repotting season is spring, or it can be done in July or August, taking advantage of the plant's semi-dormant state during the high-temperature period. Money Trees have relatively strict requirements for potting soil; the potting soil should be slightly moist and well-draining, and an acidic sandy loam containing humus can be used.

The growing requirements for the Money Tree are in fact its precautions as well, all inseparable from sunlight, water, soil, humidity, temperature, and nutrients. Pay attention to creating an environment suitable for the Money Tree's growth, and the Money Tree will thrive.
