How to Save a Yellowing Asparagus Fern: Common Diseases in Asparagus Fern Care

Asparagus fern, also known as cloud bamboo or climbing asparagus, is often placed by plant lovers in studies, living rooms and other spots to purify the air and add a literary, elegant atmosphere. But growing asparagus fern is not something you can do by groping in the dark like the blind men examining an elephant; you need to know a little about asparagus fern to grow it well. So how do we save an asparagus fern that has turned yellow?

1. Excessive light: direct sunlight easily causes the leaves to turn yellow or even die.

Treatment: asparagus fern likes a semi-shaded, semi-humid environment, is not cold-tolerant, and should be kept out of direct sunlight.

2. Too-dry potting soil: water runs straight through, the soil becomes compacted, and long-term lack of moisture causes the plant to die of dryness.

Treatment: it is best to repot once a year, preferably in spring, and also to replace the soil with a sandy soil rich in humus and well drained.

3. Improper watering: too much water and overly wet potting soil easily cause root rot and yellowing, dropping leaves; too little water and too-dry potting soil easily cause yellowing leaf tips that wither and fall off.

Treatment: water according to the weather, the plant's growth and the condition of the potting soil, correctly following the rule of not watering until dry and watering thoroughly when you do, and never giving "half water", that is, watering only enough to wet the soil surface while the lower soil stays dry.

4. Improper fertilizing: applying raw fertilizer or fertilizer that is too concentrated will make the leaves turn yellow and drop.

Treatment: during the growing season, apply a diluted, well-rotted liquid fertilizer once every half month; once the plant has taken shape, fertilizing should be appropriately controlled to avoid leggy growth that spoils the plant's appearance, and prune it appropriately.

5. Smoke and dust pollution: asparagus fern fears smoke, dust and harmful gases most of all, and keeping it in a place with poor air circulation easily causes it to wither and die.

Treatment: the placement spot should be well ventilated, and there should not be heavy smoke and dust pollution.

Even if your asparagus fern is sick, plant lovers should not worry too much; just compare it against the causes above and match the symptoms to treat your beloved asparagus fern accordingly.
