How to rescue and prevent root rot in carnations?
When growing carnations, many people find that their carnation pots develop root rot, and because of the root rot the flower centers begin to lose color, and some worry that if the root rot continues the carnation will die. So how do you save a carnation with root rot?
Carnation root rot is generally caused by watering too diligently; if the potting soil never dries out and stays too moist, the roots will rot. When a carnation has root rot, you should water less and let it get more sun.
Improve soil permeability
The carnation, a herbaceous plant of the genus Dianthus in the family Caryophyllaceae, requires soil conditions that retain fertilizer and have good aeration and drainage. If the soil is too heavy and clayey, with poor water retention and aeration, it easily causes root rot.
The best solution is to increase the soil particle size by adding some large-particle material to the soil, such as perlite, to enhance its aeration and water retention. This is beneficial for the growth and development of the root system.
Maintain good water circulation
In fact, a major cause of root rot is a lack of oxygen: root growth is sealed off, damp and stuffy, and growth stalls. When water accumulates severely in the potting soil, the weather is stuffy and hot, and the leaf temperature is too high, the nutrients accumulated in the above-ground parts cannot be transported to the roots; for roots that are already growing poorly, with nutrition unable to keep up, root rot is inevitable.
In daily care you must control your hands and pay attention to water control; when watering, follow the principle of watering when dry and withholding when wet, and water again only when you see the soil surface has clearly loosened. Or simply use the bottom-watering method to let the water circulate, which is more beneficial for root growth.
Maintain good water circulation and prevent and control pests and diseases
In fact, carnations kept at home rarely suffer from insect pests, and the only diseases are leaf spot and gray mold. The main one affecting the roots is gray mold; once it breaks out severely, the roots will also be infected by the pathogen. Once pests or diseases are found, spray promptly for prevention and control.
How do you save a carnation with root rot? Seasons and climates differ, and the amount of water given to carnations differs too, so when watering carnations people should understand the relevant knowledge and not just pour on too much water, which causes root rot.
