Pest and disease control methods for lucky bamboo: early prevention is key
When growing lucky bamboo as a houseplant, if you are not good at caring for it, it will suffer from pests and diseases. Its leaves will no longer be lush green, and the entire lucky bamboo plant will wither away. For this reason, when growing lucky bamboo, you must know the pest and disease control methods for lucky bamboo.
(1) Leaf spot disease
This disease occurs on the leaves of lucky bamboo, and it is prone to occur in humid weather. The diseased spots are initially small brown spots, with a water-soaked, faded green margin around them, and they expand in concentric rings, circular to oval, with brown edges and grayish-white centers. In the later stage, dark brown mold spots appear in the center of the diseased spots, and under humid conditions they turn into a dark brown mold layer.
Control methods:
1. Promptly remove diseased and dead leaves;
2. In the early or late stages of the disease, spray with 0.5%-1% Bordeaux mixture or 50% carbendazim at 1000 times dilution.
(2) Anthracnose
This disease also occurs on the leaves of lucky bamboo, and in severe cases it can spread to the leaf stalks. The diseased spots initially appear as small water-soaked yellow spots, and after expanding they become oval to irregular brown or yellowish-brown spots, slightly showing concentric rings. In the later stage, the diseased spots merge into a dry, withered patch and produce small black dots arranged in concentric rings. This disease is mainly caused by poor ventilation, and the presence of scale insects favors the occurrence of the disease.
Control methods:
1. Strengthen care and apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer;
2. In the early stage of the disease, spray with 0.3%-0.5% equal-amount Bordeaux mixture (or 60% zineb at 800-900 times dilution, or 70% thiophanate at 1500 times dilution).
(3) Brown soft scale
When soft scale insects harm plants, they generally gather on the leaf surface or tender leaves, piercing and sucking the plant's sap, and at the same time excreting sticky liquid. Their excrement easily causes a large proliferation of sooty mold fungi, turning the stems and leaves black, affecting the plant's photosynthesis, causing weak growth and yellowing leaves, and impairing their ornamental value. In severe cases, the branches and stems are covered with insect bodies, causing the plant to turn yellow and wither, affecting its growth.
Control method: If there are few affected plants, or the number of insects is not large, generally scraping off the insect bodies with a bamboo strip or similar object is enough.
There are many more pest and disease control methods for lucky bamboo. The prevention and treatment of diseases differs for different pests. When growing lucky bamboo, you should know the main pests and diseases that may appear, and then carry out targeted control to ensure that lucky bamboo is grown well.
