How to grow Anthurium in water? Master the key points to keep your Anthurium bright and dripping with color
Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum) is a plant suited to hydroponics. Perhaps because hydroponic Anthurium lets you enjoy not only the flowers and leaves but also the roots, many households like to grow Anthurium hydroponically. But did you know that hydroponic Anthurium also has quite a few key points? Only by grasping these key points can your hydroponic Anthurium stay bright and dripping with color.
For hydroponic Anthurium, the key is water, but its growing environment is also quite important.
1. Planting container
A transparent glass container.
2. Water capacity of the planting container
The roots are aerial roots, so fill to 1/2 of the planting container, leaving some air around the upper part of the roots; it is best if the growing points of the aerial roots are half in and half out of the water.
3. Root treatment
1) Remove the soil from the roots and rinse with clean water several times until the white roots are exposed. Be gentle to avoid damaging the roots;
2) Then soak the roots in clean water for about 2 hours;
3) Trim off overly long and withered, rotten roots;
4) Choose robust, virus-free Anthurium plants. They can be disinfected with agricultural streptomycin and then acclimated with a flower nutrient solution;
5) The roots of hydroponic plants grow exposed, and when they contact light, the plant cells carry out photosynthesis; the same goes for the roots. It is normal for them to appear green. As long as there is no direct sunlight, healthy root growth can usually be ensured. Not all hydroponic plants end up with green roots when healthy. For example, some are brown.
4. Temperature
Anthurium is extremely sensitive to temperature. Sudden fluctuations up and down in temperature are extremely unfavorable to Anthurium growth. The most suitable temperature: 19~25 degrees; the lowest extreme temperature 14 degrees, the highest extreme temperature 35 degrees; day-night temperature difference 3~6 degrees.
5. Light
For leaf growth and flower bud formation, the most important influencing factor is light. When light is sufficient, the plant's assimilate synthesis is good; at high temperatures, more assimilates are needed. In winter, try to bring as much natural light into the greenhouse as possible; clean glass and an unshaded greenhouse can be used. In summer, direct sunlight should be avoided.
6. Humidity
1) Maintain relatively high humidity of 70%~80% (20~28 degrees). If you must choose between high temperature and low air humidity, you should give priority to the former - high temperature.
7. Air
Maintain ventilation. If ventilation is not provided in time, harmful gases will increase and beneficial gases will decrease, affecting the normal growth and development of the plant.
8. Water
1) Water quality: Anthurium roots are very sensitive to salts and have strict requirements for water quality. The optimal pH of the water is 5.5, and it can be between 5~6. It is best to use rainwater that has fallen for a while; when using tap water, let it sit for 3~4 days so the chlorine volatilizes; do not put the standing water in sunlight, to avoid the formation of green algae; cooled boiled water can be used.
2) Water temperature: The watering temperature should be kept at around 15 degrees, including the added nutrient solution.
3) Water-changing frequency: Mild underwatering is better than overwatering.
9. Topdressing
Anthurium cultivation should avoid fertilizers with high nitrogen content; the nitrogen content of liquid fertilizer should not exceed 250 mg/L. For finished plants, a nitrogen content occasionally reaching 400 mg/L is also acceptable, but the plants must then be irrigated with water. And when liquid fertilizer is applied by top spraying, the plant leaves should be rinsed promptly with clean water; otherwise the liquid fertilizer remaining on the plant leaves will damage the leaves and form gray corky scars on the leaves.
It can be seen that to make hydroponic Anthurium achieve the ornamental effect required, you must, according to the above requirements, create an environment suitable for hydroponic Anthurium growth.
