Why Do Anthuriums Turn Yellow and How to Handle Yellowing Anthuriums

Why do anthuriums turn yellow? When an anthurium turns into a "yellow palm," besides the appearance perhaps not being to your liking, it may also fail to survive. Therefore, many friends who have just started growing anthuriums ask about the cause. In fact, there are many reasons that cause anthurium leaves to turn yellow, and they need to be treated according to the specific cause to fundamentally solve the problem.

Anthurium is also known as flamingo flower, tailflower, etc., and belongs to the genus Anthurium in the family Araceae. It was discovered and introduced for cultivation in Colombia, Costa Rica and other places in Latin America in the late nineteenth century, with a history of only more than a hundred years. Its characteristics are that it likes warmth and fears cold, likes moisture and fears drought, and likes shade and avoids sun exposure. Its flowers are unique, with a spadix inflorescence, bright and gorgeous colors, rich color variations, and leaf-shaped bracts. Common bract colors include red, pink, white, etc., and it has great ornamental value.

Anthurium yellowing may be caused by the following reasons.

1. Metabolism

If you find that the leaves of an anthurium are turning yellow, pay attention to observing the condition of the other leaves. If the leaves are fresh tender yellow-green while the flowers are growing well, it means new leaves are growing, and old leaves turning yellow and dropping is a normal phenomenon.

2. Unsuitable soil

In most areas of the north, the medium and water contain relatively more salt and alkali. Because the medium lacks the soluble iron that the plant needs to absorb, the leaves will gradually lose green color and turn yellow. Solution: Use oxalic acid and the like to treat the medium and the water used for watering flowers.

3. Overwatering

When the new leaves of an anthurium turn yellow while the old leaves remain normal, this situation is generally caused by watering too much or too frequently, which keeps the medium in the pot overly wet for a long time, or even waterlogged, causing part of the fibrous roots to rot, hindering normal respiration and nutrient absorption, and causing the leaves to gradually turn yellow and drop. Solution: Water normally.

4. Dry air

In winter, when the air indoors where flowers are grown is overly dry, phenomena such as dry and yellowing leaf tips, scorched leaf margins, or scorched spots on the leaves and curled edges often appear. Solution: According to the growth characteristics of the anthurium, appropriately increase air humidity.

5. Excessive shading

If the anthurium is placed in a shaded place or a place with insufficient light for a long time, it will lead to weak growth, thin and yellow leaves, and no flowering or very little flowering. Solution: According to the growth characteristics of the anthurium, appropriately increase light intensity.

6. Unsuitable temperature

If the indoor temperature in winter is too low, the leaves will turn yellow; if the room temperature is too high, the plant will transpire excessively, and the roots will not supply enough water and nutrients, which will also cause the leaves to turn yellow. Solution: Keep the temperature in the greenhouse relatively stable.

7. Uneven fertilization

Too little fertilization, or not repotting or changing the soil for a long time, and a lack of nutrients such as nitrogen in the soil will lead to weak branches and leaves, and thin and yellow leaves. In addition, excessive fertilization can also cause new leaves to be thick and uneven, while old leaves have dry tips and scorched yellow and drop. At this time, fertilization should be stopped immediately, watering should be increased, and part of the old soil should be removed, replaced with new culture soil, and normal management should be carried out.

Because anthurium yellowing is caused by different reasons, the handling methods are all different. Therefore, when anthurium yellowing is found, first confirm its cause, and then prescribe the right remedy.
