What Season Do Azaleas Bloom In? Can Azalea Blooming Time Be Controlled?

Azaleas, as ornamental flowering shrubs, not only have beautiful green leaves, but especially their brilliant flowers leave a deep impression on people. Perhaps for this very reason, friends who grow azaleas all care about: what season do azaleas bloom in? Can azalea blooming time be controlled?

Azaleas are evergreen or semi-evergreen shrubs, and among all ornamental flowering shrubs, they can be called beautiful in both flower and leaf. I believe friends who grow azaleas around them all look forward to azaleas blooming!

1. Azalea Blooming Time

In fact, azaleas bloom at different times depending on the region and variety. If azaleas are cultivated in a greenhouse in the north, they can bloom in January to February, while azaleas grown in open ground bloom in March to May, and azaleas in high-altitude environments bloom in July to August.

2. Under What Conditions Do Azaleas Bloom

Blooming is extremely closely related to temperature levels and the growth and development of azaleas, directly affecting flower bud formation and bud development, and is one of the important factors in controlling flowering. Practice shows that: under certain light conditions, within a temperature range of 15-25°C, flower buds develop faster and flowering time accelerates, with blooming in about 30-40 days; below 15°C, flowering takes more than 50 days.

If you want azaleas to bloom during the Spring Festival, then in January of that year or about 20 days before the Spring Festival, move the potted azaleas to a greenhouse at 20°C, and they must be placed in a sunny spot, with other care as usual. When the Spring Festival arrives, you will be able to see the azaleas produce colorful and gorgeous blooms.

If you want azaleas to flower on May 1st, then before budding in early spring, move the potted azaleas to an indoor cold storage below 5°C, and around April 10th move them to a sunny spot in a 20°C greenhouse for a period of care, and by April 20th place the azaleas outdoors, then by May 1st the azaleas will be able to bloom.

Azaleas pruned immediately after flowering can bloom in late October. If properly pruned during the peak growth season, the azalea flowering period can be delayed by about 40 days; if pruning is combined with cuttings, the azalea flowering period can be delayed until February of the following year.

3. How Many Times Do Azaleas Bloom in a Year

Azaleas generally have three flowering periods. Spring azaleas generally bloom between April and May, and they first bloom and then produce new leaves; summer azaleas bloom in May to June, and they first produce new leaves and then bloom; spring-summer azaleas bloom between the two, with flowers and leaves sprouting almost simultaneously. However, some places have now even cultivated azaleas that bloom in all four seasons.

Temperature can control the blooming time of azaleas. Therefore, as long as you are familiar with this characteristic and handle it properly, azaleas can not only bloom year-round, but also bloom on schedule.
