Pothos and Spider Plant Each Have Their Strengths: Which Is Better, Pothos or Spider Plant

Which is better, pothos or spider plant? Pothos and spider plant are both green plants with a very high occurrence rate in homes: some people like the verdant, graceful trails of pothos, while others are fond of the slender, elegant beauty of spider plant. Perhaps aesthetics have no good or bad; to rank them, maybe we can only look at their functions.

Pothos and spider plant are both green plants, and judging by appearance alone, each has its own merits. But when it comes to their ability to purify air, perhaps a ranking can be made.

(1) Spider plant can carry out photosynthesis under weak light, can absorb more than 80% of harmful gases indoors, and its ability to absorb formaldehyde is extremely strong. In a general room, keeping 1-2 pots of spider plant can absorb nearly all toxic gases in the air; one pot of spider plant in a room of 8-10 sq m is equivalent to an air purifier. Because newly renovated houses continuously release harmful gases such as formaldehyde, environmental protection experts suggest keeping plenty of ventilation after renovation, keeping a few pots of green plants such as spider plant, and after leaving the house vacant for three to six months it can basically meet the standard for moving in; it can absorb nearly all carbon monoxide and nitrogen peroxide given off by stoves, electrical appliances and plastic products, and can also break down benzene and absorb relatively stable harmful substances such as nicotine in cigarette smoke, so spider plant also has the laudatory name of "green purifier."

(2) Pothos can absorb benzene, trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, etc. in the air. According to environmental scientists, a newly renovated new home should be ventilated more, and then placing a few pots of pothos can basically meet the standard for moving in; newly laid flooring very easily produces harmful substances. Because pothos can simultaneously purify benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde in the air, it is very suitable for placement in newly renovated rooms. With an extremely strong air purification function, it has the good name of green purifier.

From the above introduction, in fact, both pothos and spider plant have the effect of purifying air. And spider plant is slightly better than pothos at absorbing formaldehyde. Therefore, if used to absorb harmful gases after newly renovating a home, you might as well place more pots of both plants; and as home decoration and embellishment, in fact both are suitable, and you can choose according to the home decoration style, or even personal preference.
