Fipronil Toxic Eggs: Council of Agriculture's Three Arrows Push for Uniform Entry and Exit of Chickens, etc.
The fipronil pesticide-contaminated egg scandal has flared up again, and returning to source management at laying hen farms is the key to addressing the root cause! On the 15th of this month, eggs from Shunhong Ranch in Changhua tested positive for the prohibited pesticide fipronil, once again sparking discussion on medication regulations and management at domestic laying hen farms.
Today (27th), the Council of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Environmental Protection Administration, and Office of Food Safety presented a report at the Legislative Yuan on "Medication Management at Laying Hen Farms and Cross-Ministry Response Mechanisms." Council of Agriculture Deputy Minister Huang Chin-cheng stated that the laying hen industry will be upgraded through "uniform entry and exit" whole-farm disinfection, egg collection centers, and a "washed and graded egg mechanism." Regarding the current predicament of chicken lice having "no available medication," Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine Deputy Director-General Tu Wen-chen stated that alternative medications to replace fipronil are currently under review, and the approval process will be expedited so that farmers have legal medications available.
Egg Profile: According to the Council of Agriculture's 2018 (ROC year 107) Q3 livestock and poultry statistical survey, there are 1,842 laying hen farms nationwide, with 39.69 million birds raised, producing 20 million eggs per day and 7.5 billion eggs per year, of which 80% are battery cage eggs. Changhua, Pingtung, Tainan, and Chiayi have the highest numbers of raised birds.
