50,000 specialty poultry settle in the highland pastures of Wuqia County
**50,000 specialty poultry in Wuqia County "fly" into the highland pastures
(Agricultural Wealth Network) On the Yurqitash pasture in Wuqia County, the largest summer pasture in southern Xinjiang, more than 12,000 Pamir chickens peck happily for food beside one snow-white yurt after another. This was a scene the author witnessed personally a few days ago.
In order to make full use of the existing pasture resources, Wuqia County invested 200,000 yuan specifically to purchase 8 incubators and more than 50,000 hatching eggs of specialty poultry such as chickens, red-billed geese, ducks and pigeons for hatching on its own. After the chicks grew into young birds at two months old, Party members and officials from the paired assistance units delivered them free of charge to the yurts of impoverished herders for pasture grazing.
Over the past two years, Wuqia County has treated the specialty breeding industry as an important channel for driving economic development and increasing the income of farmers and herders, dividing the whole county into 10 specialty breeding zones, investing more than 3 million yuan to build 2 poultry hatching and breeding bases with an annual supply capacity of 400,000 chicks (birds), and building 4 brooding centers in 4 townships including Heiziwei Township. At present, the county raises 300,000 specialty poultry of 14 varieties, and each township has also set up 2-3 associations of farmers and herders for breeding, fattening and sales, helping red-billed goose specialty breeding become large-scale and industrialized.
Zhang Ping, the county's deputy governor in charge of agriculture, told the author: We are now working hard to transform scientific and technological achievements and to hand specialty breeding techniques and development space to the farmers and herders, so as to strengthen their capacity for "blood-making" to escape poverty, and initial results have already been achieved.
"In the past, our red-billed geese could only be sold in Kashgar and Kizilsu, but now Urumqi and even inland cities such as Dalian and Guangzhou can eat the red-billed geese we raise, so no matter how many we raise, we are not worried at all." Ayufu, a specialized red-billed goose farmer in Kezil Aigen Village, Bayin Kuluti Township, who has a breeding scale of 4,500 red-billed geese, said proudly.
It is understood that the county has invested more than 16 million yuan to fence off all existing pastures for specialty poultry grazing. At present, more than 50,000 specialty poultry (birds) in the county have been distributed to more than 1,200 impoverished farming and herding households, directly driving more than 3,000 farming and herding households to develop highland specialty poultry breeding, and this year the planned breeding scale is to reach 250,000 (birds).
"Grazing specialty poultry on pastures not only saves feeding costs, but also helps control locusts and nourish the grass. The specialty poultry produced has delicious meat and is a truly green highland grass chicken, very popular in the market." said Wang Qiwei, Party secretary of Ulugqat Township.
