Late-maturing citrus successfully overwinters, high-quality fruit becomes a hot commodity in the market
"Sorry, sorry, our Qingjian citrus is already sold out, come back next year to buy it..." Liu Min, owner of Yixin Breeding and Cultivation Farm, helplessly hung up the phone and said to us, "If only we had planted more late-maturing high-quality citrus, this year's more than 100,000 jin of fruit still wasn't enough to sell, even at 5 yuan per jin there's none left..."
The late-maturing high-quality citrus Qingjian is a high-yielding, stable-yielding, high-quality seedless late-maturing orange variety. Because it peels easily and its flesh is soft and juicy, it reaches the market during the off-season for fruit in March-April (stored fruit can be supplied until May-June), and is hailed as the queen of citrus. It is currently one of the preferred important varieties for structural adjustment of citrus varieties.
Yixin Breeding and Cultivation Farm, formerly known as Degan Science and Technology Demonstration Farm, was established in 2001 and has planted a total of 85 mu of the late-maturing high-quality citrus Qingjian. Due to poor management in the early stage, it did not achieve much benefit. In 2008, technical improvements in fruit tree management were implemented throughout the orchard, fruit tree management was strengthened, and more than 100,000 jin of citrus successfully overwintered. The citrus is of excellent quality and is deeply loved by consumers.
An analysis of Yixin Breeding and Cultivation Farm's successful experience yields several points: first, strengthen management, changing extensive management to fine management; second, apply fertilizer reasonably, changing single-fertilizer application to formula fertilization; third, bag the fruit to reduce surface contamination of the fruit; fourth, increase promotional efforts; fifth, make reasonable use of regional advantages and carry out activities such as fruit-picking festivals and on-site fruit picking to boost fruit sales.
