5,000 Chinese high-fin banded sharks settle in the Xijiang River
A total of 5 million fish fry were released in Gaoming yesterday.
"Come on, everyone, release a basin of fish." Xian Ruilun, member of the Standing Committee of the Foshan Municipal Party Committee and executive vice mayor, called on those around him to join in as he poured a basin of fish into the river. Yesterday morning, the themed event of Foshan City's 2009 "Fishing Moratorium and Release Festival" was held at the Century Square in Gaoming District on the bank of the Xijiang River, with about 120 leaders and guests attending. A total of 5,000 large-size Chinese high-fin banded sharks (a national second-class protected aquatic animal) and 5 million fry of grass carp, bighead carp, bream, mud carp, common carp, crucian carp and other species were released into the river, with a value of about 190,000 yuan. Foshan City has carried out stock enhancement and release into the Pearl River waters for 28 consecutive years, playing an important role in promoting a virtuous cycle of the ecological environment and achieving increased fishery efficiency and fishermen's income.
