Peng Yongwu, a farmer from Gaoguan Town, Benxi County, Liaoning Province

In recent years, Peng Yongwu, a villager from Xinnong Village in Gaoguan Town, Benxi County, started from nothing and built a broad road to prosperity, becoming a fine example for his neighbors and fellow villagers.

Peng Yongwu is a farmer born and raised in the area. He has no diploma to speak of, yet he has a strong sense of commerce and an eye for observing the market. Several years earlier, he had chosen the trade of breeding forest frogs (Rana dybowskii), and through his own hard work he earned his first bucket of gold on the road to prosperity. Having achieved initial success, Peng Yongwu was not content with the status quo or willing to stand still. In 2004, Peng Yongwu and several villagers went into partnership, took out all their savings, and did something his fellow villagers never expected: they hired vehicles and workers to level a large plot of land halfway up the hill north of the village and built factory buildings. It turned out that, based on market information, he had set his sights on a new industry - deer farming.

Easier said than done. To build a deer farm, buying bricks and breaking ground both required large amounts of capital. But these difficulties did not daunt Peng Yongwu. With sheer drive, and with the help of relatives and friends, he managed to put up the farm buildings. After the buildings were completed, Peng Yongwu had spent all his savings. Many people said he was acting recklessly: the forest frogs were being raised perfectly well, so why raise deer? The investment was so large - what if he lost money? Peng Yongwu knew what he was doing. He was determined to set a good example for the villagers on the road to prosperity.

With the help of village officials, Peng Yongwu took out a loan and bought more than 20 sika deer (Cervus nippon). Since deer farming was a niche pursuit in Xinnong Village, there was no farming experience to draw on. Peng Yongwu learned while doing and accumulated experience as he went. He strictly followed technical requirements, keeping the deer shed clean indoors, disinfecting it every day, and at the same time ensuring food hygiene and nutritional balance, so that the sika deer would have good living conditions. In the early days, Peng Yongwu ate and slept in the deer shed, caring for them more than he cared for his own children. Whenever he noticed anything abnormal about them, he immediately consulted experts and actively treated them. And so, under Peng Yongwu's careful attention, these sika deer grew up healthy, each with a sturdy body and very pleasing to look at. Many people who visited the deer farm were full of admiration.

Three years have passed, and today Peng Yongwu's deer farm has begun to take shape. Many of the deer have grown velvet antlers, and the annual income can reach 100,000 yuan. Last year, he invested in another batch of deer, and the herd will soon reach more than a hundred. He often says: the road to prosperity grows ever broader, and I will certainly lead more of my fellow villagers to prosperity.
