Bumper harvest of Beijing's premium rare variety Suziyu tribute jujubes
Currently, the jujube farmers of Suziyu Village in Dahua Mountain Town, Pinggu District, are all beaming with joy. The village's 1,600 mu of Suziyu tribute jujubes have enjoyed a bumper harvest, with output quadrupling compared to last year. The honey jujubes were snapped up by merchants as soon as they were picked from the trees, once again becoming a hot commodity on the market.

Suziyu honey jujubes are oblong, with small pits, thick flesh and thin skin. They are of top quality and excellent flavor, with sweet and crisp flesh. According to tests by experts from Beijing University of Agriculture, the sugar content of fresh jujubes reaches 40%, and that of dried jujubes reaches as high as 73.8%. When a dried jujube is broken open, the sugar strands can be stretched over a chi long without breaking, and the fruit can be stored normally for one year without deteriorating. It is a famous, special, premium and rare traditional superior variety in the Beijing area. It has won the Beijing Golden Fruit Cup Award and was recommended as fruit for the Beijing Olympics. In 2002, the trademark “Suziyu” was officially registered.

Suziyu honey jujubes have a long cultivation history, having been developed in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. By the Qianlong period, jujube trees already formed forests. Through selection and development, they gradually formed a unique local famous, premium and special fruit product of exceptionally fine quality, and were presented to the imperial palace as tribute, becoming a product exclusively supplied to the imperial palace. After the founding of New China, they became a fruit exclusively used for state banquets.

This year, the expected output of Suziyu honey jujubes is 400,000 jin, of which 100,000 jin have already been sold, and large numbers of citizens are coming to pick them after hearing of their fame.
