Villager Ji Yunsheng of Xiashi Village: Scientific Rabbit Farming Leads to Prosperity

    Ji Yunsheng, 47 this year, is a villager of Xiashi Village in Jiangnan Town. In 2004, seeing others prosper from farming rex rabbits, he conceived the idea of raising rex rabbits himself. After investigating from various sources, he judged it truly feasible, so he raised 8,000 yuan and brought in 10 groups of rex rabbits, beginning his rex rabbit farming. 

    Rex rabbits have a very high reproduction rate. In less than a year, the 40 rex rabbits Ji Yunsheng raised had produced more than 600 young rabbits. Under his careful rearing, he sold more than 300 commercial rabbits that same year, earning 16,000 yuan. This first success further strengthened Ji Yunsheng's confidence in developing rex rabbit farming. To expand the scale of his operation, in 2005 he expanded the rabbit sheds to more than 400 sq m, and the rex rabbit inventory reached more than 1,600. In 2006, his rex rabbit inventory was nearly 3,000, with more than 200 breeding rabbits and more than 2,000 commercial rabbits sold that year, earning 70,000 yuan. 

    To make this industry project benefit more of his fellow villagers, in 2006 Ji Yunsheng took the lead in establishing Xingda Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd., guiding other farming households in raising rex rabbits. At present, the number of rex rabbit farming households in Xiashi Village has grown to 7, with a rex rabbit inventory of more than 4,000, making it a pillar industry of the village.
