Guava grower Huang Shunyou nets 150,000 yuan from his 20-mu base

In Gaobu Town there is a farmer named Huang Shunyou who specializes in growing Taiwan Pearl guavas. Yesterday he told this reporter with a big smile that, based on his annual yield of 3,000 jin per mu and a selling price of 3.5 yuan per jin, after deducting costs, his 20 mu of Taiwan Pearl guavas bring in about 150,000 yuan a year.

Dongguan's climate suits guavas

Yesterday, at the guava growing base in Zhukan Village, Gaobu Town, this reporter saw guava trees with lush branches and heavy fruit, each one big and mouth-watering. Huang Shunyou, the owner of the guava growing base, was happily harvesting the fruit.

Huang Shunyou told this reporter that the guavas he grows are no ordinary guavas, but an excellent fruit variety introduced and bred from Taiwan, China - the Taiwan Pearl guava. He introduced this variety because it is easy to cultivate, has sweet fruit and high yield, is nutritious and attractive in appearance, and sells well on the market at a high price. In addition, Dongguan's climate is suitable for guava growth, so both yield and sales are quite good.

Guavas sell for 3.5 yuan per jin

Last year Huang Shunyou planted 20 mu of guavas in one go, determined that this new variety would bring good economic returns. Judging from Huang Shunyou's harvest so far, his good judgment at the time seems to have been confirmed. "These 20 mu of guavas have grown quite well since March 12 last year, and the product has been on the market for more than ten days now. We sell them for about 3.5 yuan per jin, and sales on the market are quite satisfactory. Local residents quite like eating them," Huang Shunyou said.

According to Huang Shunyou's estimate, based on a yield of 3,000 jin per mu from this guava plot and a selling price of 3.5 yuan per jin, after deducting costs, the income from the 20 mu will reach about 150,000 yuan. This income has moved them a big step forward on the road to prosperity from previously relying solely on growing traditional crops to make a living. Having tasted the benefits of specialty agriculture, Huang Shunyou also plans to pass on his experience to the villagers so they can get rich together.

Gaobu plans full-scale promotion

A staff member of the Gaobu Town Agricultural Technology Center told this reporter that the town is currently actively introducing the Taiwan Pearl guava and plans to promote it throughout the town, making it a major feature of Gaobu's agricultural economic development and a new path to prosperity for farming households. After the introduction, the Agricultural Technology Center will provide hands-on guidance to farmers growing guavas, striving for guavas to achieve the highest growth efficiency. A good planting project plus scientific planting methods and specialty agriculture have given farmers who have long grown traditional cash crops a new path to prosperity.

With large-scale planting and a bumper harvest of this fruit, guavas will become a major feature of Gaobu's agriculture.
