How does Wu Long, the "Rabbit Farming King", raise rabbits?
Many children of farmers go to college precisely to change their fate of "facing the yellow earth with their backs to the sky." However, after graduating from university, young Wu Long from Laoting County returned to his hometown with the dream of making a career in the rural world. After 4 years of hard work, Wu Long built a Rex rabbit farm with more than 10,000 rabbits in stock, becoming a widely known "Rabbit Farming King."
Wu Long, 28 years old this year, dresses simply, wears a pair of myopia glasses, and shows a touch of scholarly refinement between his brows. In 2005, Wu Long graduated from Hebei University of Economics and Business with a major in computer science. After graduation, relying on his professional skills, he worked at a computer company in Shijiazhuang, with a monthly income of two to three thousand yuan. For a college student who had just entered society, his situation was already quite good. However, even such an enviable job could not hold back Wu Long's attachment to the land that had raised him, and he made a choice that was hard for others to understand - packing his bags and returning to his hometown to start a business.
Wu Long's father had many years of breeding experience. Under his father's guidance, he went to the market and conducted research, choosing Rex rabbits as the breeding direction. At that time, although Rex rabbit breeding had good market prospects, Rex rabbits had many diseases and poor disease resistance, and Rex rabbit breeding was affected by the seasons, with relatively large price fluctuations and a certain degree of risk. But Wu Long believed that if he mastered breeding techniques and could respond quickly to the market, the profits would be considerable. Once his determination was set, he raised funds from various sources, rented land and built a 3-mu breeding community, purchased 60 breeding rabbits, with a total investment of nearly 30,000 yuan.
But once he actually started raising rabbits, the difficulties were far greater than he had imagined. Problems in links such as disease prevention and feed came one after another. After several months of breeding, the Rex rabbit stock had reached several thousand. Whether selling breeding rabbits or processing them into skins, he could profit tens of thousands of yuan. But things did not go smoothly. Because there were many rabbits and he lacked breeding experience, more than half of the rabbits fell ill. After treatment, fewer than one third survived, with a loss of nearly 20,000 yuan. In the face of difficulties, Wu Long did not bow his head. He learned lessons, repeatedly analyzed and summarized, and decided to take two paths well: on one hand, research breeding and disease prevention and expand scale; on the other hand, watch the market and focus on purchasing finished products.
Through hundreds of experiments, Wu Long developed his own finished feed for Rex rabbits, which both reduced costs and produced good breeding results. The Rex rabbits he raised did not get sick, the rabbit meat was heavy, and they came to market earlier than those of other free-range households, with large size and long fur. Many free-range households came to him for advice. At the same time, he directly purchased finished and semi-finished rabbits from free-range households to raise, sold rabbit skins at the right time, and adopted a business model of breeding plus purchasing.
After more than two years of effort, Wu Long's farm continued to expand, with the area expanded to 13 mu, the stock number multiplied several times, and fur and rabbit meat already sold outside the county. The young man's wallet gradually grew fuller. However, fortune is fickle. In 2008, a fire almost burned away his dream of becoming rich. This fire destroyed nearly 300 sq m of raw material, ingredient, and feed processing workshops, with direct losses reaching more than 300,000 yuan. However, Wu Long was not defeated. He summarized the reasons for the failure and used color steel equipment to build living rooms, a research room, an ingredient room, a slaughter area, a feed storage area, and a finished feed processing area, altogether about 400 sq m of plant construction area. He introduced modern finished feed processing equipment, with a total investment of more than 200,000 yuan. He also contacted customers through the Internet in many ways, and products were sold to Sichuan, Zhangjiakou, Cangzhou and other places outside the province, with annual sales of nearly 100,000 rabbits.
