Tips for Growing Flowers at Home: A Summary of Practical Flower-Growing Experience
Friends, winter is almost here, so what should you do with your plants at home? Actually, growing flowers is easy if you make it easy, and hard if you make it hard. Today Xiaomei will introduce some tips for growing flowers at home, and also answer some flower-growing questions that flower lovers often ask. Once you pay attention to these, you won't have to worry about failing at growing flowers!
1. Follow the plant's habits; know yourself and know your plant
The most important thing in growing flowers is to understand and master their growth habits, especially the dormant period.
1. Plant growth is not always continuously flowering and fruiting. As the seasons change, there will also be a dormant period of slow growth or stopped growth, or even the whole plant withering and dropping a large number of leaves. Understanding this is very important. For perennial plants, apart from some herbaceous flowers such as dwarf petunias and moss rose, which can grow and bloom year-round when the temperature is suitable, most perennials generally show an alternating pattern of a vigorous growth period, a dormant period, and a semi-dormant period.
2. In winter, most plants must go through a dormant period or semi-dormant period (a few that prefer cool climates, such as freesia, narcissus, and cyclamen, will continue to grow and bloom). Understanding their dormant period and semi-dormant period will be of great help for growing flowers at home.
In other words, plant growth does not continue forever. After blooming heavily, there must also be a process of rest and recovery. Rest is for better blooming later.
Therefore, when growing flowers, following the plant's growth habits is extremely important. The more you understand, the more you follow their habits, and with extensive care, the better you will grow them.

2. Water properly, and you're halfway to success in growing flowers
When growing flowers at home, abnormal flower drop and leaf drop in plants are mostly related to water and soil. If you water improperly, the plants will not grow well; if you water properly, they will grow better.
1. When watering: do not give a fixed amount of water every day, do not go without watering for a long time, and do not only spray without watering for a long time. Soil that is too dry or too wet, or watering that does not penetrate, is not good for plant growth.
2. The correct watering method: look at the surface soil layer, that is, the shallow soil layer 3~5 cm deep, and water alternately dry and wet, and when you water, water thoroughly. Water until water seeps out from the bottom of the flower pot. If water retention is not strong, be sure to use the soaking method, and do not be afraid of too much water.
3. When watering, do not be afraid of too much water; what matters is that you water thoroughly each time. This method applies to the vast majority of plants.
Too much water means during long periods of continuous rainy weather, mostly in summer or autumn, causing high humidity inside the soil, resulting in water accumulation and root rot. In the dry winter and spring, as long as you water properly, it will not happen.

3. Fertilize well, and it's the icing on the cake
Besides water, plants also need fertilizer for growth. The correct fertilizing method can make plants grow better.
1. When fertilizing plants, do it during the vigorous growth period, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer; during the bud period and fruit enlargement period, mainly with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.
In the early stage of plant seedling growth (before the rapid growth stage when 4 or 5 true leaves appear), the dormant period, the peak flowering period, the seedling recovery period after transplanting plants, as well as in the high temperatures of midsummer and severe low-temperature environments, topdressing is not suitable. Improper topdressing can easily burn the seedlings.
2. When fertilizing plants, adhere to the principle of "light fertilizer, frequent application," that is, when you are not confident about the fertilizer, use a little each time, with at least 10 days between two fertilizations. This is beneficial to plant growth.
3. Fertilizing methods: as base fertilizer, before transplanting plants, in a new flower pot, mix a small amount of fertilizer with soil. Slow-release farmyard manure or organic fertilizer can be used.
As topdressing, apply it together with watering. For potted plants, dig a small furrow in the soil at the edge of the pot, put in the fertilizer, then cover with soil and water thoroughly.
Doing a good job with fertilizing makes growing plants even better, taking it a step further. Miracle-Gro has many fertilizers for everyone to choose from~~~
4. Frequently changing the soil and repotting is a big taboo in growing flowers
For beginners, when they find that a plant is growing poorly, they rush to change the soil and repot. This is extremely unfavorable for growing flowers and for plant growth.
1. During the plant seedling stage, you should observe the condition of the seedlings and gradually move them from small pots to larger pots. This is fine. When the seedlings are small, they recover quickly after repotting, and after repotting the seedlings grow a size larger.
But for plants that have already grown to full size, there is no need.
2. Even if you are repotting, first look at the season. Every year in spring from March to May and in autumn from September to November, during these two periods, plants are easy to keep alive after repotting. Of course, this also varies from plant to plant.
3. During plant growth, the dormant period and the early growth stage are suitable for repotting. At this time, repotting has the least impact on the root system and little impact on plant growth, and the plant is easy to keep alive after repotting.
But during the bud period, flowering period, fruit enlargement period, and fruiting period, it is very unsuitable. Repotting will cause a large number of flowers and fruits to drop, which will not only affect the ornamental effect, but also have an adverse effect on its growth.
4. The biggest taboo in repotting is doing it continuously in a short period. For example, repotting 3 or 4 times within 10 days. Even the toughest, easiest-to-grow plants cannot stand it, and they will be tormented to death.
This is because after repotting, plants need a period of recovery before they resume growth. For large plants, the time needed is even longer. Continuous repotting will not only endlessly prolong the recovery time, but also, if the recovery care is improper, easily kill the plant. No matter how well it grew before repotting, after repotting it has to start all over again, and all previous efforts are wasted. For large plants, repotting once every 2 or 3 years is enough. Never do it continuously.
