Baishuiyang, Linhai, Zhejiang Sees a Bumper Water Bamboo Harvest This Year, Growers' Incomes Rise
(Agricultural Wealth Network) Recently, Yang Tongnian, a villager from Xiyangzhuang Village, Baishuiyang Town, Linhai City, brought 400 kg of water bamboo (wild rice stem) to the Shuanglou Water Bamboo Market and sold it at 4.5 yuan per kg, earning 1,800 yuan that day. Since late August, he has sold a full cartload of water bamboo every day, and over more than two months, his income from water bamboo alone has already reached more than 60,000 yuan.
Like Yang Tongnian, more than 1,000 water bamboo-growing households in more than 50 villages in the town, including Shuanglou, Dianqian, Xiyangzhuang and Qiantang, have found a path to higher income by growing water bamboo.
"This year, thanks to favorable weather and scientific management, the town's more than 3,000 mu of water bamboo saw a large-scale yield increase, with per-mu yield up about 15% year on year, and total water bamboo output is expected to reach more than 5 million kg," said Wang Guangyong, director of the town's Agricultural Office. In recent years, the town's water bamboo industry has developed rapidly. Every year during the peak water bamboo sales season, the Shuanglou Water Bamboo Market, covering more than 30 mu, handles a daily water bamboo transaction volume of 200,000 kg, with products sold as far away as Shanghai, Ningbo, Shandong and other places.
