Large-scale agriculture in Jiahe, Hunan fills farmers' pockets
(Agricultural Wealth Network) Since October 25, Wang Kaibing, a major grain grower in Zhongliang Village, Guangfa Township, Jiahe County, with the help of two combine harvesters, finished harvesting more than 2,900 mu of late rice in ten days. It is learned that this year, 2,897 large growers in the county have filled their pockets through modern large-scale farming methods, with the average household income exceeding 24,000 yuan.
This year, in response to the actual situation of gradually increasing abandoned rural farmland, the county has worked to guide farmers onto the path of intensive management. In the townships with relatively large land areas, such as Guangfa, Shiqiao, Longtan and Puman, large-scale land transfer has been carried out through leasing, contracting, joint operation and technical shareholding, and skilled technicians and large growers in tobacco, grain and fruit cultivation have been introduced and encouraged to establish more than 180 modern large-scale agricultural cultivation zones, continuously raising the level of intensive management of low-yield or abandoned rural farmland. To allow large growers to focus on production, departments in the county such as tobacco, science and technology, agriculture, agricultural machinery and forestry selected technical backbones to form 7 specialized service teams for seedling raising, mechanical cultivation and plant protection, providing careful technical guidance. For large growers introduced from other places, county departments such as tobacco and science and technology also provided wage guarantees when hiring seasonal workers for them, solved difficulties such as curing barns, housing, water and electricity, and children's school enrollment, transported coal for curing free of charge, advanced production electricity fees, and truly helped them resolve difficulties and optimized the production and living environment.
The county also adapted measures to local conditions and comprehensively promoted advanced processes such as intensive greenhouse seedling raising, mechanized and semi-mechanized plowing and ridging, and unified pest and disease control, and successively introduced modern equipment such as cultivators, rice transplanters, harvesters and curing machines. According to statistics, after mechanized operations were implemented, not only was the labor intensity of farmers reduced, but each mu could also reduce labor use by 17.6 workers and lower production costs by 1,224 yuan. Cheng Zhengqing, a major tobacco grower in Futang Village, Longtan Town, contracted 125 mu of village farmland to grow tobacco at the beginning of this year, and the county tobacco company specially assigned him a tobacco leaf production technician to provide technical services throughout the process. This year, Cheng Zhengqing sold a total of 387.5 dan of tobacco leaves, with an income of 334,000 yuan.
