Prosperity Reaches Every Household in Rihedong Village, Yartang Township, Baima County, Qinghai
(Agricultural Prosperity Network)    A thousand merits and ten thousand virtues are worth less than the people's pockets being full. The Party branch of Rihedong Village has always aimed to increase the people's income and improve their quality of life, actively exploring channels for raising incomes in light of local conditions.

Rihedong Village is 20 km from the county seat and sits right along the highway. Making full use of this convenient transportation advantage, the village Party branch raised 100,000 yuan in 2003 to buy 8 four-wheel tractors and organized the village's young and able-bodied men into the "Sanjia" transport team. With the contact and help of the township Party committee and government, they contracted the hauling of sand and gravel for infrastructure construction in and around the county seat. That year, the transport team earned 120,000 yuan, increasing per capita income by 120 yuan. In 2005, the village Party branch contacted Dari, Gande and other counties in the prefecture, organized 60 villagers into a Chinese medicinal herb gathering team, and collected 22 kg of cordyceps, earning nearly 700,000 yuan, an increase of 1,000 yuan per capita.

At a branch meeting, village Party branch secretary Gongshe said: "Small-scale ventures can only earn small money. To earn big money, we must strengthen our competitiveness and operate on a larger scale." In 2007, the Party branch mobilized 40 households of Party members and villagers, raised 3.15 million yuan, and purchased 10 heavy-duty trucks of 28-ton capacity. With strong support from the county Party committee and county government, they actively contacted the county cadre housing renovation office and contracted the hauling of cement, steel, red bricks and other building materials for the cadre housing renovation project. This single project alone generated a profit of more than 2 million yuan. Under the guidance of the Party branch, the village's herders tasted the sweetness of higher income and saw hope for prosperity. In early 2009, 42 households spontaneously raised 1.26 million yuan, bought 4 large trucks, and joined the Party branch's transport team.

Most of Rihedong Village's residents live on mountaintops and in remote mountain areas with poor transportation and difficult access to drinking water, which seriously affects their production and daily life. To solve these practical difficulties, in 2002 the village Party branch actively sought projects and funding and, by means of "subsidizing the majority, with a small portion self-raised" and organizing villagers to help with labor, invested 310,000 yuan to relocate 21 households living on the mountaintop to near the Banyou Highway, where transportation and drinking water are convenient. In 2005, they secured 10,000-20,000 yuan to repair the village's 3 suspension bridges. In 2008, they raised 320,000 yuan to build 22 km of rural roads. After learning that the impoverished household Angzhi had driving skills, the Party branch guaranteed a bank loan of 360,000 yuan and borrowed 60,000 yuan from villagers to buy him a large truck, allowing him to join the "Sanjia" transport team; he repaid all the loans and borrowed money and now lives a good life.

In June 2009, the Party branch raised 14,000 yuan through the approach of "those with money contribute funds, those without contribute labor." After giving 2,000 yuan to each of the 7 impoverished households in the village with difficult lives and simple houses, including Suonan and Jiahua, they mobilized the whole village to build each impoverished household a new 60 sq m house. Under the united leadership and unremitting efforts of the Party branch, the villagers of Rihedong Village gradually embarked on the road to prosperity, and their lives improved day by day. In 2008, the village's collective economy reached more than 2 million yuan, and the per capita income of herders reached 3,000 yuan, ranking among the top in the county's administrative villages.

Village Party branch secretary Gongshe said: "One or two people being rich does not count as being rich. Our goal is for the whole village to be prosperous and live a better and happier life."
