Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Opening Sends Chongming, Shanghai "Farmhouse Fun" Into Overdrive
(Agricultural Wealth Network) On the last day of October, the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge officially opened to traffic. The next day, Sunday, November 1, the reporter set foot on Chongming Island and immediately felt a wave of excitement. Nearly a hundred tour buses packed with citizen tour groups were driving in a mighty procession straight to Chongming Dongping Forest Park. An auntie from Pudong said happily: "We came specifically for Chongming's fresh air, Chongming hairy crabs and green agricultural products. We're going to stay several more days."

At noon, the farmhouse restaurants near the forest park were instantly buzzing with noise. The proprietress of "Grandma's Farmhouse" bustled back and forth attending to guests. Wiping a table excitedly, she said: "Business has never been this good. The opening of the Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge is our road to prosperity." The reporter personally saw her turn away several groups of customers who came to dine and several more who wanted to book rooms for the coming weekends.

According to Zhao Jie, general manager of Chongming Tourism Investment Company, the opening of the Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge has brought a springtime for Chongming tourism's vigorous development. Because large numbers of tourists entered Chongming after the tunnel and bridge opened, local accommodation in Chongming was relatively tight through the end of November, and travel agencies also found it difficult to book rooms in bulk. "Farmhouse" accommodation was also relatively tight on weekends.

Industry insiders pointed out that the opening of the tunnel and bridge brought Shanghai residents their favorite green leafy vegetables, Chongming cake, Chongming hairy crabs, laobaijiu and Chongming white goats and other specialty agricultural products, making them more "intimate" with Shanghai residents. Shanghai residents now have one more great place for weekend vacations, and it has also added hope for increasing Chongming farmers' income and rapidly fattening their wallets.
