Henan's targeted assistance hits the nail on the head
(Agricultural Wealth Network)     In the early winter season, the cold air is piercing. However, in the fields of Daluwang Village, Bailiang Town, Yanling County, fine flower and tree varieties glowing with emerald green can be seen everywhere; around Shangzhuang Village, Zhanbei Township, Xiangcheng County, the peppers inside the plastic greenhouses are lush and verdant, presenting a scene of abundant harvest.

Three years, three major steps

"The Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences has sent three batches of assistance work teams in three years, enabling Daluwang to take three major steps in three years in its new socialist countryside development!" Recently, Wang Tiezhuang, the nearly sixty-year-old Party branch secretary of Daluwang Village, Yanling County, praised the new socialist countryside development assistance work team of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

"The flower and tree varieties in the fields have become more high-grade." Daluwang Village has 1876 mu of cultivated land, 95% of which is planted with flowers and trees. Facing fierce market competition, there was an urgent need to adjust the industrial structure of flower and tree varieties. After studying this issue, the assistance work team guided farmers to carry out concentrated planting of single varieties and large-scale production, and established a flower and tree demonstration garden in the concentrated flower and tree planting area, driving the whole village's seedling and flower industry to a higher grade and level and enhancing its ability to resist market risks.

"The flowers and trees sold fetch a higher price." The assistance work team helped the village establish a flower and tree sales company and a market information center, and set up the Daluwang Village flower and tree website. The village's income per mu from seedlings increased from 2000 yuan several years ago to nearly 6000 yuan now.

"The flowers and trees attract more tourists." The assistance team used the local advantages in flowers and trees to develop sightseeing and leisure tourism. It built fishing, fitness and eco-tourism areas; and established farmhouse leisure, dining and vacation areas to provide dining and entertainment services for visiting guests.

Assistance enriches the "poor village"

Shangzhuang Village, Zhanbei Township, Xiangcheng County, is located at the southeastern foot of Shou Mountain. The village has 1056 mu of cultivated land and a population of 956 people, and is a provincially designated poor village. After the assistance work team from Zhengzhou College of Animal Husbandry and Engineering entered the village, it proceeded from local realities and opened up a path of economic development with local characteristics.

Planting off-season greenhouse watermelons and peppers is the leading industry of Shangzhuang Village. The work team from Zhengzhou College of Animal Husbandry and Engineering helped Shangzhuang Village select and breed famous and high-quality Henan local watermelons, crossbreed and cultivate new varieties, and hired well-known agricultural experts from the school and the province to enter the village and households to teach cultivation techniques. At the same time, it registered the "Lvzhizhou" fruit and vegetable professional economic cooperative, established a watermelon association, and successfully held two watermelon economic and cultural festivals, creating the "Xiang melon" brand.

The work team also invited senior agronomists from Henan Agricultural University to Shangzhuang Village to give lectures to villagers, spread practical techniques and scientifically guide production.

Characteristic agriculture has set Shangzhuang Village on the road to moderate prosperity. In 2008, the planting area of greenhouse watermelons and peppers in Shangzhuang Village developed to 850 mu, and per capita income exceeded 10,000 yuan.
