Guangxi promotes virus-free sugarcane seedlings on a large scale
(Agricultural Wealth Network)     Recently, a reporter learned at the healthy seed cane production demonstration site for sugar sugarcane in Maping Township, Xiangzhou County, Guangxi, that according to on-site inspection results, the virus-free healthy seedling field of New Taiwan Sugar No. 22 had a theoretical yield of 8 tons per mu, an increase of 42.9% over non-virus-free seedling fields. With input costs unchanged, planting virus-free healthy sugarcane seedlings can increase sugar cane farmers' economic income by more than 200 yuan per mu.

It is understood that compared with conventional seedlings, virus-free seedlings increase sugar sugarcane stalk yield by 15.1%-52.1% and sucrose content by 0.12%-1.71% (absolute value). At present, promoting the planting of virus-free healthy seedlings has become the most effective technique for preventing and controlling the degeneration of sugarcane variety traits.

Guangxi treats the promotion of virus-free healthy sugarcane seedlings as an effective method to further increase total sugarcane output and sugar cane farmers' income. Since 2007, it has invested a total of 9 million yuan, relying on the Guangxi Sugarcane Research Institute and the Liucheng County Sugarcane Research Center to carry out breeding and demonstration work for virus-free healthy sugarcane seedlings. After two years of project implementation, the region has cumulatively bred and promoted 6 million virus-free healthy seedlings. Among them, in 2007-the first half of 2008, 1.5 million virus-free healthy seedlings were planted, and in the first half of 2009 the number reached 2.5 million. About 1.5 million virus-free seedlings are currently being cultivated and can be planted in fields by the end of the year. At present, nearly 10,000 mu of second-generation virus-free seedlings have been promoted and planted in production across the region, with planting areas reaching more than 10 major sugarcane-producing areas.
