The "western cashmere goat industry belt" in Ngari, Tibet is beginning to take shape
(Agricultural Wealth Network) During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, a key characteristic agriculture and animal husbandry project built in Tibet, the "western cashmere goat industry belt," has now begun to take shape. Cashmere, the main product of cashmere goats and hailed as "soft gold," has become a booster for the economic development of the industry belt and for increasing the income of farmers and herders.
According to statistics from the Ngari Prefecture Administrative Office, in 2008 the number of cashmere goats on hand was more than 1.46 million, accounting for 48.09 percent of the total livestock on hand. At present, a cashmere goat industry belt pattern has been formed with the Rutog County white cashmere goat foundation herd as the core, the Coqen County purple cashmere foundation herd, and the white cashmere expansion breeding farms in the two counties of Ge'gyai and Gertse as the two wings.
The construction of the industry belt directly drove up the income of local farmers and herders. In Rutog County of Ngari Prefecture, cashmere output rose from 52 tons in 2006 to 73 tons in 2008, and the annual per capita income of farmers and herders increased by 144.25 yuan.
In order to better develop the cashmere goat industry, Ngari Prefecture strengthened the injection of scientific and technological content into it. With the aim of preserving the original breed, scientific and technological workers further researched and promoted artificial insemination technology and frozen semen production technology, established a diversified cashmere goat technology extension system, and accelerated the pace of converting cashmere goat scientific and technological achievements.
Cashmere is smooth and delicate to the touch, and its textiles are light, thin and warm. Ngari Prefecture began building cashmere goat bases in the 1990s, and in recent years it has actively integrated into the construction of the "western cashmere goat industry belt," enabling the cashmere goat industry to achieve substantial development.
