Study confirms climate warming affects plant reproduction in French Guiana
Study shows climate warming affects plant reproduction in French Guiana
The French National Centre for Scientific Research recently issued a bulletin stating that climate warming has severely affected plant reproduction in the tropical rainforest of French Guiana.
According to the bulletin, between 1995 and 2005, French researchers conducted a 10-year survey of all plants on a mountain in the tropical rainforest of French Guiana. The results found that over the 10 years, one fifth of the plants had their reproduction affected, with trees and shrubs in the seedling stage being affected the most.
The researchers also found that over the 10 years, half of the rare plants on this mountain had already gone extinct.
The researchers said this phenomenon is mainly caused by climate warming. Over the past 50 years, the average temperature in French Guiana has risen by 2°C, and drought conditions in the tropical rainforest have become increasingly severe, causing many plants to be unable to reproduce normally.
The researchers said that climate warming has affected all plant species in the tropical rainforest of French Guiana to varying degrees, and may even cause an ecological crisis.
