Canada wheat production for 2009/10 cut by 500,000 tonnes
According to the latest report released by the US Department of Agriculture, the 2009/10 Canada wheat production forecast has been lowered by 500,000 tonnes to 24 million tonnes, because the planted area figure was cut by 100,000 acres and the yield figure was also reduced.
In September, temperatures in the wheat-producing regions rose sharply, setting an all-time record high, but after entering October, temperatures dropped abruptly, and the weather became very cold and rainy. This caused problems for wheat harvesting in some areas, especially in Saskatchewan, which accounts for about 48% of the country's wheat.
For the province as a whole, 10% of Saskatchewan's wheat has not yet been harvested, but as of November 4, 20 to 40% of the wheat in the central and northern parts of the province still remained unharvested. Excessive rainfall in the region left the farmland muddy and hindered wheat harvesting.
