Indian government says no large-scale wheat import plan
Indian government says it does not plan large-scale wheat imports
A cabinet minister said Monday that domestic wheat stocks are sufficient and the government has no plans to import wheat.
India's wheat production reached a record 80.58 million tonnes in 2008/09, while the Indian government's wheat stocks stood at 26.8 million tonnes as of November 1.
The Indian government will not import wheat immediately, but private flour millers in the south have already begun importing small quantities of wheat because domestic prices have risen.
