Canada wheat 09/10 production down 500,000 tonnes to 24 million tonnes
2009/10 Canadian wheat production data revised down by 500,000 tonnes to 24 million tonnes
According to the latest report released by the US Department of Agriculture, the 2009/10 Canadian wheat production forecast has been revised down by 500,000 tonnes to 24 million tonnes, due to a 100,000-acre reduction in the planted area figure and a lower yield estimate.
In September, temperatures in the wheat-growing regions rose sharply, setting an all-time record high, but after entering October, temperatures dropped abruptly, and the weather was very cold and rainy. This caused problems for wheat harvesting in some areas, especially Saskatchewan, which accounts for about 48% of the country's wheat.
Across the province, 10% of Saskatchewan's wheat has not yet been harvested, but as of November 4, 20 to 40% of the wheat in the central and northern parts of the province still had not been harvested. Excessive rainfall in the region left the farmland muddy, hampering the wheat harvest.
