Lean meat powder incident leaves Beijing with insufficient supply, pork prices rise 15% instead

Yesterday, reporters learned from the Shuangqiao market that over the past month, pork prices in the Beijing market have shown a continuous upward trend. In one month they rose by about 15%.

Market monitoring shows that yesterday the price of white-strip pork (fatty) at the Shuangqiao market was 9.9 yuan/jin, up 15.1% from 8.6 yuan/jin in the same period last month. The price of white-strip pork (lean) was 10.8 yuan/jin, up 18% from 9.15 yuan/jin in the same period last month. Prices of other meats also rose slightly.

Analysts at the Shuangqiao market pointed out that the rise in pork prices was mainly caused by the “lean meat powder” incident, which sharply reduced the amount of pork produced in Henan entering Beijing, leading to insufficient supply, as well as the recent rise in labor costs and feed costs. It is predicted that as the “lean meat powder” incident is resolved and its impact gradually fades, coupled with an increase in the number of live pigs sent to market, pork prices will tend to stabilize in the future.

It was also learned that the price of new garlic on the market is currently 2—2.2 yuan/jin, a drop of 28.8% in one month. Compared with the same period last year, it fell by about 12.9%.
