A few things to note when raising rabbits for the first time

Points to note for farmers raising rabbits

    1. Master the basic knowledge of rabbit raising and market conditions: rabbit raising is also a science, and farmers engaged in rabbit raising must master the basic knowledge of rabbit raising, such as breeds, feed, and the construction of rabbit houses and rabbit cages. Under market economy conditions, whatever project one operates must be decided according to market conditions. If you plan to raise rabbits, you should read several books on rabbit raising, and it is best to also subscribe to relevant farming newspapers and periodicals. You can also, according to your own conditions and needs, take part in relevant training courses or visit relevant rabbit farms and markets for inspection.

    2. Before the rabbit raising plan is implemented, prepare the rabbit house and feed: as the saying goes, “Before the troops move, grain and forage go first.” First of all, the site selection of the rabbit farm is especially important, as environmental conditions directly affect the healthy reproduction, growth and development of the rabbit herd. In addition to promoting compound feed for rabbit raising, farmers can also grow grass to raise rabbits according to local conditions.

    3. Select and raise excellent breeds: the quality of the breed is the foundation related to the success or failure of a rabbit farm, especially for a breeding rabbit farm. Therefore, special care must be taken when purchasing breeding rabbits. How can breed purity be judged? First, look at appearance: each breed has certain breed characteristics; any rabbit that conforms to the characteristics of that breed is generally considered purebred, otherwise it is crossbred. Second, look at production performance: each breed has certain body weight and production performance indicators; those meeting the standards can be considered purebred, otherwise they are crossbred. Third, look at its parents: for some advanced-grade crossbreds, one must see whether its parents conform to the characteristics of that breed. In addition, breed purity can be further identified through test crossing, which will not be described in detail here.

    4. On the issue of the scale of rabbit raising by farmers: if farmers raise only a small number of rabbits, on the one hand they do not attach importance to it mentally and the rabbits are not raised well, and on the other hand, because there are few rabbits, the income from rabbit raising is also low. Our country must also take the road of rabbit industry industrialization. Farmers should adapt to the local market and their own technology, funds, labor and feed conditions. Taking rex rabbits as an example: a small rabbit farm should raise 30~50 foundation female rabbits, a medium rabbit farm 300~500 is better, and a large rabbit farm can raise more than 1,000 foundation female rabbits; if raising commercial rabbits, the number can be increased further. Scale benefits must be considered, but one cannot divorce oneself from one's own conditions and blindly pursue running a large rabbit farm.

The mentality that raisers should have

    1. Farmers operating rabbit raising or other breeding projects should hold a small-profit mentality and should not have a windfall-profit mentality. Getting rich overnight is unrealistic, because only after subtracting cost expenditures from breeding income is there net profit. Operating commercial rabbits inherently yields large profits, and there are also risks of losses other than rabbit diseases, so only by being down-to-earth, hardworking and enduring hardship, and relying on scale breeding, can high benefits be obtained.

    2. Raisers should strengthen market awareness, not be confused by false appearances, and even less follow the trend in breeding. Because under market economy conditions, what kind of rabbits to raise and how many to raise should all be based on market sales as the basis for decision-making.

    3. Strengthen quality awareness. Rabbit raising is not only about creating a good rabbit house living environment for the rabbits, but also about paying attention to feed hygiene and nutrition, and even more about persisting in selection and mating, so that the quality of rabbit products can be guaranteed, and only high quality can sell at a high price.

    4. Strengthen the concept of legality, be a law-abiding rabbit farmer, and do not use rabbits to engage in seed speculation and fraud.
