Initial success for scallop farming trial in Dongying District
In order to speed up the structural adjustment of the mariculture industry, improve the overall benefits of shallow-sea aquaculture, and resolve the contradiction between supply and demand for sea use, the Ocean and Fisheries Bureau of Dongying District, Dongying City, Shandong Province, planned a 5,000-mu experimental sea area for scallop farming, in accordance with an application from the Guangli Port Fishermen's Association.
The scallop farming trial began in May 2011; the average growth size has now reached 4cm, and the expected farming output can reach 300,000 tons, with an output value of 1.5 million yuan. The initial success of the scallop farming trial will certainly play a huge role in promoting the development of the marine aquaculture and enhancement industry, and will also radiate outward to drive the development of many sectors, including aquatic product processing and distribution, fishing gear manufacturing, and aquaculture services.
