Yunnan rice variety reaches nearly 1,000 kg per mu

Recently, a domestic report that the Yunnan rice variety "Chujing 28" achieved an average yield of nearly 1,000 kg per mu over 100 mu, far exceeding Yuan Longping's "Y Liangyou 2" at 926.6 kg per mu, attracted attention from all sides. Yesterday, Li Kaibin, the breeder of "Chujing 28" and a rice breeding expert at the Chuxiong Prefecture Agricultural Science Institute in Yunnan, confirmed to reporters that "Chujing 28" indeed yields nearly 1,000 kg per mu. However, he pointed out that "Chujing 28" is a new conventional japonica rice variety developed through conventional hybrid breeding methods, while Yuan Longping's "Y Liangyou 2" is a hybrid indica rice variety developed using the two-line method, and the two are not comparable.

It is understood that "Chujing 28" is a new conventional japonica rice variety bred by hybridizing "Chujing 26" as the female parent and 96Y-6 as the male parent. After years of experimental planting, it has been confirmed that this variety generally has high yields in Yunnan, especially in Midu County of the province, where its average yield per mu over 100 mu has exceeded 950 kg for 3 consecutive years, and in 2010 the average yield per mu at its highest even reached 1,002.11 kg.

In response to the claim that this rice variety far exceeds Yuan Longping's hybrid rice, Li Kaibin said that "Chujing 28" belongs to conventional japonica rice, while Yuan Longping's super rice belongs to hybrid indica rice, and they are two different types of rice varieties. The two differ greatly in morphological characteristics, physiological functions, and cultivation methods.

Li Kaibin said that "Chujing 28" is more suitable for planting in japonica rice areas at altitudes of 1,500 to 1,850 m in Yunnan as well as Sichuan, Guizhou, and other places. "Hybrid indica rice" varieties are more suited for planting in low-altitude indica rice areas.
