Meat, egg and vegetable prices fell in most parts of China during the National Day holiday

According to a report by China National Radio's "National News Network," during the National Day holiday, supplies of finished grain and oil, eggs, pork and other agricultural and sideline products were ample nationwide, prices were stable, and meat, egg and vegetable prices declined in most areas.

Monitoring by the national agricultural and sideline products and agricultural inputs price quotation system shows that with the start of the National Day holiday, supplies of major agricultural and sideline products continued to increase across the country, and prices of basic agricultural and sideline products such as oil, grain, meat and eggs tended to stabilize. After rising by more than 20% since August, the prices of pure peanut oil and soybean oil have now stabilized. Guo Aimin, a researcher with the national agricultural and sideline products and agricultural inputs price quotation system, analyzed that a renewed significant rise in grain and oil prices is unlikely.

Guo Aimin: During the National Day holiday, most people generally arrange to travel, so demand for agricultural and sideline products is even a bit lower than during some traditional festivals, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Spring Festival.

As for pork, with demand declining after the Mid-Autumn Festival and supplies increasing, prices have fallen. Liu Tong, a researcher in the statistics department of the Beijing Xinfadi Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, said, combining statistical data:

Liu Tong: Our current pork price is 11 yuan 5 mao per jin, for carcass pigs. At the highest point we reached 12 yuan 3 mao 5, before the Mid-Autumn Festival. But before the National Day holiday this price fell by more than 8 mao per jin, a fairly obvious decline.

During the holiday, domestic egg prices also began to fall. Monitoring data show that the number of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities with prices below 5 yuan/jin increased from 2 at the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival to 8.

⟧    Guo Aimin: We saw in some farmers' markets that a while ago the eggs were all relatively large, all laid by old hens; now what is generally sold is mainly medium and small sizes, which proves that newly added hens have also entered their peak laying period. According to the data we monitor, egg prices have indeed been falling since the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Egg prices at the Beijing Xinfadi Wholesale Market also confirm this data.

Liu Tong: Egg prices have fallen quite a lot compared with a while ago. Our highest price, before the Mid-Autumn Festival, reached 5 yuan 6 fen at wholesale; now it is 4 yuan 2 mao 4, a drop of 8 mao per jin, indicating that egg supplies are relatively ample.

Since the start of autumn, leafy vegetables have grown quickly, market supplies have increased markedly, and, together with various measures taken in different places before the National Day holiday to actively stabilize prices, vegetable prices nationwide have fallen steadily, with the Beijing area especially obvious.

Liu Tong: The price of celery is now relatively low, and the bok choy, baby bok choy, baby spinach and cilantro that ordinary people often eat are all fairly cheap. Cilantro is 1 yuan, baby bok choy is 3 or 4 mao, baby spinach is below 1 yuan, and a while ago it reached 2 yuan 5 or 3 yuan, so the price declines are all fairly large. In addition, several kinds of vegetables have run into difficulty selling. For example, onions and potatoes are both relatively cheap. For example, Chinese yam, at this time last year it had to sell for 5 or 6 yuan per jin, and now it is only a bit more than 1 yuan; the decline in this price is also fairly large.
