Making a fortune from exotic pet breeding: niche market holds business opportunities for wealth

At the Huaite flower, bird, fish and insect market in Shijiazhuang, there is a very "exotic" pet shop -- "Reptile Legion." Here you can find everything from land tortoises as big as a washbasin and green iguanas 1.8 m long to sea snails as small as a fingernail and shrimp 1 cm long.
The shop owner is a young man who looks fresh-faced and shy. People call him "Xiangzi," and his full name is Li Yuanxiang. He graduated from Hebei Normal University in 2010. Starting this pet shop with 10,000 yuan in capital, he had already earned more than 100,000 yuan in just a few years.
In 2007, when Li Yuanxiang had just entered his sophomore year, he already had the idea of starting his own business: "Rather than face a hard job search after graduating from university, it would be better to try my luck early." Although his family unanimously opposed the idea, he was determined, and his parents finally agreed to let him give it a try.
With a few thousand yuan he had earned from part-time work in his freshman year, plus a few thousand yuan his parents scraped together, Li Yuanxiang raised a total of 10,000 yuan in capital to rent a storefront and buy equipment. In October 2007, his pet shop, positioned around selling novel and unusual reptiles, opened, and he named it "Reptile Legion." He decided to open a pet shop not only because he had loved raising small animals since childhood, but also because he had his eye on this market; choosing "exotic" pets was meant to "stand out from the crowd."
But there are so many kinds of "exotic" pets. Exactly which pets suited the aesthetic tastes and spending levels of pet lovers in the provincial capital? Which pets carried low risk and high profit? Li Yuanxiang conducted painstaking market research. "I basically covered the pet markets in Shanghai and Guangzhou. I carefully studied what varieties sold for what prices and what purchasing channels there were," he said.
As the saying goes: even with vast wealth, breathing creatures do not count as assets. Raising pets well is not easy, and compared with ordinary pets, these novel and unusual reptiles are even harder to care for. Their living habits are strongly affected by the seasons, and they are picky about what they eat, so they are very difficult to keep. Li Yuanxiang managed the business while also learning breeding techniques. Because he was not skilled enough at first, one day three pets in the shop died, and he lost more than 1,000 yuan at once. "That was my mother's monthly salary at the time." Even now, Li Yuanxiang still feels deep regret when he talks about it.
Through persistence and continuous learning, "Xiangzi" finally carved out his own place in the reptile pet market. Butterfly horned frogs, red rose tarantulas, Sulcata tortoises... the pet varieties in his shop grew more and more numerous, they thrived better and better, and his income gradually increased. In July last year, he took the initiative to pay pension insurance for his mother and "hired" her to quit her job and help him look after the shop, while he opened another shop in the market, specializing in wholesale "aquatic plant landscaping."
After Li Yuanxiang succeeded in his business, the classmates and friends who had once worried about him now also rolled up their sleeves, either proposing to start a business with him or asking him to help choose a suitable entrepreneurial project. Teachers at his alma mater also treated him as a "model" of independent entrepreneurship and often invited him back to "speak from personal experience."
In March last year, he also took classmates to Shanghai to visit an entrepreneurship project exhibition and conduct in-depth project inspections at companies.
"Have courage; do not be afraid to negotiate with clients just because you are young and inexperienced. Be good at making friends; do not fight alone. Constantly adjust your showroom layout to attract customers. The varieties you sell should be complete, and you must learn to provide different services to different customers..." Li Yuanxiang generously shared his "business wisdom." Of course, he did not forget to remind others: "Passion alone is not enough for entrepreneurship. To realize your dream, you must build up relevant knowledge and skills early. In addition, you will certainly encounter all kinds of unexpected difficulties in the process of starting a business, and you must find ways to overcome them. Sometimes, persisting a little longer will bring you to a brighter future."
Under his influence, classmates Wang Jin's and Zhao Peng's entrepreneurial projects in antique restoration and education and training have now also taken shape and begun to make profits.
