2. Mengjin farmers cleverly breed ground beetles and make big money

You may have heard that raising chickens and pigs can make you rich, but you have never heard that breeding ground beetles can also make big money. Yet several farmers from the Mengjin Tianyi Ground Beetle Professional Breeding Cooperative dared to be first, and they have already tasted the sweetness of breeding ground beetles.

Wang Xiaoping is an ordinary rural woman from Sihenan Village, Chengguan Town. She has farmed at home year-round and always wanted to do something to make her family rich as soon as possible, but due to limited conditions she could never find a project suited to her own development. In early 2010, when she learned that a capable man named Wang Liang was preparing to breed ground beetles in the village, she took an interest. After gathering information from many sources, she made up her mind, raised some funds, and became one of the five breeding households in this newly established ground beetle breeding cooperative.
The breeding farm of the Tianyi Ground Beetle Professional Breeding Cooperative, located in Sihenan Village, is quite sizeable. Inside a breeding shed covering nearly 2000 sq m, 3 rows of 7-tier ground beetle rearing and nutrient pools have been built neatly and densely. In the nutrient pools, as Wang Xiaoping gently stirs with her hand, ground beetles the size of a one-fen coin come swarming out in dense numbers, then in a moment burrow back into the nutrient soil and disappear without a trace. When talking about breeding ground beetles, the taciturn Wang Xiaoping speaks fluently and confidently. She says: “The ground beetle is not only a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, but also a health food. With the development of traditional Chinese medicine, as the main medicinal raw material for treating rheumatism and femoral head necrosis, domestic and international demand is growing day by day, prices keep climbing, and the market supply falls short of demand. It is a good path for ordinary people to become wealthy.”

According to reports, the ground beetle, also known as the soil turtle, is a traditional precious Chinese medicinal herb in China, recorded in historical documents from the Han Dynasty's “Shennong Bencao Jing” to the modern “Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China”. It has effects such as dissolving blood stasis and relieving pain, eliminating toxin and regulating injuries, joining bones and reconnecting tendons, and fighting cancer. At the same time, because of its high protein and low fat content, it can regulate blood lipids. There are as many as 200 kinds of Chinese patent medicines compounded with “ground beetle”, such as Dieda Pills, Zhishang Powder, Qili Powder, and Zhonghua Dibie Capsules, with good market prospects and supply falling short of demand. At the same time, ground beetles have the characteristics of being easy to raise, free of diseases, easy to manage, and saving labour, making them very suitable for raising by left-behind rural women and the elderly. The first batch of ground beetles bred by the 5 breeding households of the Mengjin Tianyi Ground Beetle Professional Breeding Cooperative is about 100 million beetles, which can be sold this September, with an estimated output value of 600,000 yuan and very considerable returns.

“One person being rich does not count as being rich; being able to lead the masses to become rich together is our greatest wish.” According to Wang Liang, legal representative of the Tianyi Ground Beetle Professional Breeding Cooperative, ground beetle development is an important development project in the national Spark Program, and the state grants tax exemption for this kind of breeding project. The cooperative has already signed a long-term supply contract with a large pharmaceutical enterprise in Donggang, Bozhou, Anhui. Because of order requirements, they plan to develop another 20 breeding households across the county, provide financial support to key households, and cover both breeding and sales. They look forward to more nearby farmers joining to achieve common prosperity.
