Zhang Shulin: The "4:empty" ton-field corn model becomes a "beauty supermodel"

September 30, 2012, Mid-Autumn Festival. That day, the temperature rose, bringing warm and cozy weather, and the wind was calm. At around 9 a.m., two strangers walked into the home of Zhang Shulin, a farmer from Deyu Village, Yilong Town, Yi'an County, Heilongjiang Province. After introducing themselves, the older one was Meng Qinghe, 66 years old this year, and the young man was Meng Fanyou, his son. The father and son were farmers from Fulu Village, Zhenxiang Town, Qinggang County. They drove a small four-wheel tractor for more than 5 hours to visit Zhang Shulin specially and learn his high-yield corn experience.

It turned out that after 8 years of exploration and repeated comparisons, Zhang Shulin successfully created the "4:empty" corn ventilated cultivation model in 2011, namely: plant 4 rows and leave 1 row empty, narrow-row sowing on the original rows (small row spacing 45 cm, large row spacing 85 cm), single plant changed to double plants (plant spacing 25 cm, 1 hill with double plants, 96,000 plants per hectare retained). By changing the row spacing and leaving 1 row empty, a natural ventilation and light-transmitting channel is formed between the rows, achieving the advantage that every row is an edge row. It is suitable for mechanized sowing, intertillage, topdressing, pesticide spraying, and corn harvester operations. The cost does not increase, but the yield and benefit increase greatly. In 2011, Zhang Shulin adopted the "4:empty" corn ventilated cultivation technology, and 65 mu of corn achieved a good harvest with an average yield of 1050 kg per mu, and he won the Science and Technology Backbone Award from Heilongjiang Xinxin Seed Co., Ltd. In 2012, Zhang Shulin planted another 110 mu of corn according to the "4:empty" ton-field corn cultivation model, and it performed well.

The "4:empty" ton-field corn cultivation model created by Zhang Shulin became explosive news in Heilongjiang Province after being spread by news media in August 2012. It was like injecting a stimulant into large grain growers who had been painstakingly seeking high-yield corn cultivation models for many years. For a time, Zhang Shulin's mobile phone became the consultation hotline for the "4:empty" ton-field corn cultivation model.

Soon, the "4:empty" ton-field corn cultivation model became the "beauty supermodel" of the Longjiang land. Farmers were not satisfied with telephone consultations only, but came in droves from all directions to see it first. Needless to say, people from the same town and same county came; large grain growers from major corn production areas such as Keshan, Baiquan, Gannan, Longjiang, Mingshui, Zhaodong, Qinggang, Hulin, and Shuangcheng all came to Zhang Shulin's home and the "4:empty" ton-field corn cultivation model plots to get to the bottom of things.

Meng Qinghe, who had planted corn all his life, was extremely excited when he saw the report on Zhang Shulin's "4:empty" ton-field corn cultivation model, and felt it was a miracle. After consulting Zhang Shulin by phone, he still felt it was not enough. Early in the morning on September 30, Meng Qinghe, who was "old in age but young at heart," and his son got up early and took turns driving the "small four-wheel tractor," heading straight to Zhang Shulin's home to personally explore the "beauty's honorable appearance."

Through listening to Zhang Shulin's introduction and on-site observation, Meng Qinghe said with emotion: "I have planted corn for so many years, and the highest yield per mu was only one thousand two or three hundred jin. After seeing Zhang Shulin's corn planting method and density, a yield of 2000 jin per mu is well within reach." Pan Hongyu, Wang Hongde
